BLACK AUGUST LOS ANGELES MISSION STATEMENTBlack August is a commemoration of the continuing Resistance of African people to exploitation, enslavement and political repression.Black August acknowledges, honors and memorializes those who made the ultimate sacrifice through their courageous acts of self-determination.Black August Los Angeles is a collaboration dedicated to educating and empowering the community and upholding the spirit of Black August.OBJECTIVES AND GOALS OF BLACK AUGUST LOS ANGELESIn order to accomplish our mission, Black August L.A. has set the following modest goals:- Re-commitment to resistance and affirming our liberation through the traditions of Black August.- Continuing internal political education about the history and dynamics of resistance.- Continuing the legacy of resistance and raising community consciousness through various activities.- Establishing and maintaining effective communications.- Promoting and encouraging interaction between elders, youth and the community.- Develop and provide referral resources.- Developing and sustaining financial resources.BLACK AUGUST L.A. 2007 - Black August was birthed out of the Black Liberation Struggle of the 1960's and 70's. At the most powerful juncture, many freedom fighters were criminalized and incarcerated in an attempt to destroy the spirit and unity of the movement. Countless of those who fought to dismantle racism and oppression continued to demand justice even from inside the prisons, and as a result, suffered cruel and inhumane treatment. What started in California prisons as a month to honor and remember those still locked up for their commitment to liberation, has become an international solidarity struggle for freedom, justice, and equality of oppressed and disenfranchised people. Even now, there remain warriors on the inside whose voices and influence are calling and empowering the minds and spirits of people around the globe. The struggle has evolved to include fighting for prisoners rights as well as intervention on behalf of the youth outside who are being fast tracked to the penal system, or becoming casualties of senseless violence. Black August Los Angeles is sponsoring a number of events that will inform, uplift, and further the work of those upon whose shoulders we stand.
