The Toilet Gallery, London, opened on October 9th 2003, in a media frenzy. Brit Art founders, Gilbert & George, cut the toilet paper ribbon to the rapturous applause of the assembled crowd, press, two film crews and the BBC “live outside broadcast unitâ€. Reported throughout the world, the Toilet Gallery finds itself represented in all parts of America, Canada, France, Germany and the last two sightings, in Holland and Japan. The Toilet Gallery’s mission is to provide a free and highly adaptable exhibition space to new graduates and up and coming artists as well as providing the local community with an alternative art space and the opportunity to engage with contemporary art. The gallery also has links with Kingston University, where students from the BTEC Foundation in Art & Design have got involved and collaborated on projects, and where exhibiting artists have lectured. The gallery provides the opportunity for artists to engage with and curate a site-specific exhibition, which is often their first opportunity, for many new graduates who show there. We are always looking for artists and curators who are interested in putting on an exhibition. If you’ve got good ideas and want to show in an alternative space with excellent exposure and a reputation for holding innovative shows then get in touch and become our friend!Visit our website for an exhibition archive, a history about the building and info about the trustees at www.toiletgallery.org
