Art of life: the most sublime form of art

About Me

TO FIND SOME INFO ABOUT THE TUNES PRESS "LYRICS"
I originally intended to pursue a career in classical music studying french-horn and natural-horn at Trinity College of Music, but after putting that idea away (a couple of hours after I handed in my masters thesis), I've done some more or less serious attempts at doing something different, from kids-theatres, wind bands, classical, jazz bands, playing with different singer-songwriters, running impro-bands, and guesting with different rock bands. At the moment I tend to play the trumpet mostly, but none of those that know me are surprised to see me play some other instrument.
I love a real impro. Taking charge of the moment, doing what lays latent within the atmosphere of the surroundings, saying that there's sometimes nice to have a security-blanket like a chord-sheet or an actual song that I know... Or a page filled with notes to be played in a larger ensemble...
I've also been working with children/youth-theatres in the Oslo-region, mostly with Oslo Teaterskole (inhouse-musician, rehearsing, composing and playing keyboard in performances as main responsibilities) as well as some teaching, not to much of that though, not really in my heart, unless the students are eager to learn, not into doing anything on auto-pilot, (which I've been told is a routine for some music-teachers I know when dealing with pupils that aren't committed). I'd rather go without the money. Sure, if there's an eager student I'm working with the hours can pass swiftly, so if you want to learn the horn or trumpet ask someone else, I only accept those who really want to learn something that they think only I can teach them... probably why I don't have any students... bit hypocracy here, would have loved to be able to take the offers I got in Nicaragua, but alas... maybe the opportunity will arise again sometimes later...
I've been running a couple of bands, both of which are different kinds of impro. "X-profil" and "Y?", of which Y? is probably what you're hearing now. Apart from that I've played with other bands or singers, Moises Gadea a dear friend and one of my favorite singers... check him out, latest CD is out now, Ane Wilberg... I've played with bands like Frank Znort ( www.fzq.no )(tenor-horn and trumpet) for a year and a half and Oslo Brass Band since it started (tenor-horn and baritone) both of these have been good fun, operating with completely different agendas and with people from different backgrounds the Brass Band, filled up with students and proffesionals, and FZQ, where most come from the good old punk-tradition.
Of other bands I've played with for a shorter period I'll espesially mention Kobi, three concerts this year and counting with this noise-group from Oslo, all have been good experiences, developing the sense of working with timbres on the trumpet, and earlier this year a concert with the Nicaraguan group Montombo (trumpet) that is lined up with some of the greatest studio-musicians in Nicaragua, and the year in service for the pass-port I hold was done with Forsvarets Musikkorps Trøndelag (french-horn)(The Norwegian Army Band, Trondheim).
Future prospects? to grow up, learn a new instrument, or maybe do some more writing. The last is probably the thing that's most likely to happen in the near future, allthough I've recently bought a guitar... As the current plan is to finnish of a project I've had in the desk for about a year, and then I might go for a walk-about in Europe sometimes after november... Try to add places like Berlin, Paris and Rome, mostly because I haven't been there, but also because I've heard so much good about what is happening in Berlin at the moment. I originally intended to go there last year, but then I got to busy planning to go to Nicaragua... so this year... And of course there might be some other projects coming up, some are more definitive than others. For some projects what's lacking is for me to learn to pick up a phone and press some buttons...

Influences: Musical influnces John Zorn, Frank Zappa, Arve Henriksen, Supersilent, John Zorn, Frank Zappa, Stephen Stirling, Gordon Carr, Michael Thompson, and a range of other fantastic musicians. Stylistically I tend to get ideas from psalms, classical music like Gustav Mahler, oriental and middle-eastern music and norwegian folk-music, apart from that my inspiration comes from whatever lifes shows me.

But to go further everyone I've taken time to think about or spent time with have influenced me in some ways, in understanding cynicism, deceit, working for betterment of self, improvisation, art of living, humility, pride, self-confidence or lack from the same...

Then I can speak to someone for hours not thinking or a second about the person, others I can speak to learning to know the person without knowing their name, others I can know the superficialities of without knowing anyhing about them... With some I see stereotypes, and others I see the personality, sometimes I don't even see the mask, sometimes I see behind the mask without seeing the mask, and sometimes, I just look at the mask being content with that...

In the same way it is with influences, sometimes I see what others don't see, sometimes I can't even see what most others see, but most of the time I take in the superficialities, acknowledge techniques, without plowing down to search for the intentions.
Sounds Like: Depending on the moment...

Y? sounds a bit like X-profil, but with more stylistic variations... Apart from that... Your guess is as good as mine.

And for myself... it depends on the context I'm in, I have a lot of thoughts on music that might add at a later time... or just simply ask me... ranging from the misconcieved consepts to something actually given some concern. All affecting the situations I'm in. When playing acoustic concert with a singer playing on guitar, I obviously play quiet differently from when playing with noise-groups. So a free-style impro is my favorite setting, when there is place to move between different sound qualities. But most of the time people approach me to comment on my playing they commend my sound on the trumpet for being smooth without the heavy touch many trumpeters have, as a signature-sound "Standard ut" is probably a good example of my sound when playing tonal music.
