Labrats Productions is comprised of two guys from two completely different musical backrounds that combine to create a formidable alliance with one goal in mind. To make good music one song at a time.
Andrew Wilborn and James Swisher officially joined forces in 2002 to form Labrats Productions. In a seemingly short time, the two Richmond, Virginia natives have managed to create a distinct sound. "We both have the same goals in music," says Andrew,"but our differences are what help mold our sound".
Andrew had his first taste of production at a young age using the two cassette-tape decks on his Sony boombox. But it wasn't until the summer of 2001 that he decided to take his musical aspirations more seriously and bought a pair of turntables. "I've always loved hip hop music, so when I picked up my first set of turntables, everything came very naturally."
James, who has a more traditional music background, comes from a family of musicians where music was instilled in him from the beginning. He began writing music on his four-track tape recorder years before attending recording school in 2003. It was there that he learned the proper techniques necessary to reproduce the music that he had inside him. "I took piano lessons for as long as I could remember," says James, "but I started to despise them as I got older, thinking that they were holding me back. I didn't want to play other peoples' music. I wanted to play what I felt inside."
What happens when two completely different styles combine? Those two worlds yield a musical medley of hip hop and funk fusion. Labrats Productions have formed a calculated blend of live instrumentation and samples that offer even the most traditional hip hop purist a breath of fresh air. With their distinct sound, James and Andrew are attacking all genres and striving to take sound design to a whole new level. With one listen you can easily hear why Labrats Productions is a formula for success.
