Tamales

Hormelâ„¢ Hot & Spicy are the best canned tamales

About Me

Canned tamales are an American delicacy, first produced by the Austex Chile Factory in Austin, Texas in 1911. Castleberry's bought out the company several years ago and still produces Austex brand tamales, although in some areas they are distributed under the Castleberry's label.
Other early brands included Gebhardt's (a pioneer of early mass-produced tex-mex foods), Derby, and Rutherford's HyPower.
Through the years, canned tamales were also distributed by Armour, Wilson's, Libby's, Wolf Brand, and VanCamp's. Unfortunately these companies no longer produce tamales.
Today, Hormel is the best-selling brand of canned tamale.
Other popular current brands include: Ellis, Casa Fiesta, El Rio, La Preferida, Bryan, Paramount, and Nalley. Derby still sells tamales in the traditional glass jars!
Canned tamales are celebrated by many Americans as being a cheap, quick way to enjoy tex-mex in the home, while abhorred by others who consider them an unacceptable imitation of a 5000 year old Mexican dish.
