About Me

MAGDA PISKORCZYK
(pronounce: Peaskorchick) is said to be one of the most interesting blues and gospel talents of a young generation, a singer with an unusual voice timbre. Female Blues Vocalist of the Year 2003, 2004 and 2006 in Poland. Two time Semifinalist of the most important international IBC blues competition in Memphis. The author of "Blues travelling" album recorded with friends and Michal Urbaniak – a worldwide known jazz violinist. Magda is also a guitar player and song writer. She regularly (twice a month) performs with her band (quintet) in Warsaw in the most renown Polish jazz club: Tygmont.
MAGDA'S MUSIC
is her own tasteful arrangement of blues, gospel, soul, jazz and rock standards as well as modern songs inspired by these genres. She creates the music which is deeply set in the blues tradition and is innovative at the same time.
Magda’s low, deep, "black" voice suits perfectly blues as well as swing or African melodies, which are also very appealing for Magda. Joy and humour, great emotions and energy are mixed with deep message, melancholy, moving sincerity. Unusual usage of a saxophone, dobro and other guitars, percussion or other instruments, mixed with her very expressive voice make this music unique and captivating. She regularly involves the audience in collective singing, emotional shouting, clapping hands or clipping fingers.
Rev. Rabia from Berkeley, USA, famous American blues singer, wrote about Magda Piskorczyk: "Biggest recent discovery in active and exciting Polish Blues. (...) This girl must really love blues. That young and from Eastern Europe! Excellent! She is better than some Americans! (blues singers)".
Bob Brozman after the concert with Magda at Dobrofest Trnava 2005 said: "She's a great future for the music. She's a great, great musician with very good groove and sense of music".
INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE 2005 & 2006
In 2005 Magda Piskorczyk (as the first Polish performer) was qualified to take part in the biggest blues contest in the world: International Blues Challenge 2005 in Memphis, Tennessee, in which she received very good comments of the Jurors:
"You have a great "raw" sense of the music you're playing. I'd like to hear you on a full body guitar. I love your vocal phrasing"
Kelly Dobbins
"Innovative, quirky and fun"
William Beard
In 2006 Magda was again invited to take part in the International Blues Challenge contest in Memphis. Notes of the 2006 IBC Jurors:
"Your Muddy Water Blues was GREAT. I’ll remember it for a long time. Great!"
John Pfeiffer
"Very engaging performance - I like the way you bring the audience into your act - great sounds - very earthy, gutsy - this is what I think the blues should sound like! Good variety of songs - in your set - very nice - fast, slow, happy, sad - makes for a much more entertaining show!"

GOSPEL
Gospel, close to blues, is the second great fondness of Magda Piskorczyk. She appreciates achievements of many gospel singers, but the output of Mahalia Jackson is the most appealing for Magda. At the beginning of 2007, Magda Piskorczyk prepared a special program titled "Tribute to Mahalia Jackson" with new versions of songs known from Mahalia’s records to commemorate the 35th annivesary of Mahalia’s death. Wojciech Karolak, the most respected Hammond organ virtuoso in Poland, took part in this project as a special guest.
Distinct concerts of gospel standards were performed by Magda and her band in Poland, Germany and in France at Blues Sur Seine Festival. Such shows are known for gripping energy and dynamics, original arrangements, charismatic vocal, excellent contact with the audience, which is alternately involved in spontaneous amusement and deep reflection.
