Amina Olushola Heckstall, is a dancer and a cultural performing arts specialist with twenty-eight years of dance training and performance/ choreography experience. Local companies, since her beginnings at the age of three, have sought after Amina as a dancer and choreographer. Amina Heckstall has a reputation as a “Young Master” in the African Dance Community. Ms. Heckstall is also known for being an African American dancer who can embody the essence of the ancestors of Africa within her movements and choreography. Amina has been granted a Fellowship from The Sam And May Rudin Foundation for Community Service in Arts Education. She has also been awarded the Building Blocks Award, as well as the New Neighbors Award for her work with intergrating immigrants into their communities several times consecutively, using the arts. Amina has been recognized by "Vh1 Songwriter of the Year Contest", as a finalist in April 2006, in the Hip Hop category. It is her specialty, when working in her favorite environment of arts education, to intergrate Hip hop and African diasporic culture in to her lessons with the youth. Amina was a freelance dance instructor and a guest artist with the all-Guinean "Tokounou All-Abilities Dance Company" (a company with able bodied and disabled African dancers and drummers) with whom she has done a six-week residency in Florida teaching dance to at-risk/ foster care children and performing June, July, and August 2002. In September of 2002 she went with Sidiki Conde (Director of Tokounou), Nikki Heckstall, and Bintu Camara (Of Les Percussions De Guinee) to Italy to perform in Rome and Grosseto for a organization of artists with disabilities, festival called, "La Farfala" (The Butterfly). In October of 2002, Amina performed for the first time with the internationally known, all Guinea, African company Les Mervielle De Guinea African Ballet. She continues to perform with them when available, most recently in Boulder, Colorado August 2006. In June of 2004, Amina did a 7-day concert production with M'Bemba Bangoura's, "G'Bassikolo Dancers And Drummers" in Toronto, Canada for Dance Dimensions. In January/ February 2005 Amina traveled to Guinea with her Lead Drummer and friend, Fode Bangoura, to study with The Ballet of Matam, and other African Ballets in Conakry, Guinea West Africa. During July 14th to 16th, 2005 Amina produced the first Annual African Dance and Drum Conference in Brooklyn, NY called, "Africa Meets African America Cultural Arts Festival". July & August 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006 film screenings for The African Film Festival featured performances by Les Merveilles De Guinee in Harlem and Brooklyn venues (guest artist, Amina Heckstall) and Ballet International Africans (at The Queens Museum of Art) throughout Queens, New York. In her free time, Amina teaches children Jazz dance, African dance, song, drum, and folklore in various after school programs, dance schools, and community centers throughout New York City. This is what I do. Amina is a dancer, but more specifically: an African/ Contemporary dancer and choreographer. This is me. This is who I am. This is what I love to do. _______________________________________________________ ***Those with children interested in dancing and training under Amina in her group "Modupue Kidz/ Youth African Performance Ensemble" (a children's branch to BIA)or BIA II (the teen branch of the company ages 13 to 16), please send an e-mail to [email protected] or visit www.myspace. com/modupuekidz. ALSO - if you dance and would like to be a part of a wonderful, dance company, drop me a message and I will let you know how to join BIA!BALLET INTERNATIONAL AFRICANS Reminding All That The Drum Is Our Spirit!Ballet International Africans began in 1994 under the name of 'Matsimela Family In Spirit Ensemble', which was South African (Sotho language) for 'Roots'. They have also been known as, Nankama International Dance & Drum Co., from 2001 to 2005, when the group's repertoire was choreographed by both Amina Heckstall - female dancers & Mamady Sano (from Guinea)- male dancers. Nankama was a Guinea/ Balandugu term meaning, "Born For This" or "Born To Do This" In 2005, we were born to the world as Ballet International Africans, a name given to the director in Guinea. The name was given to the company by the director because of the mix of cultures that the group represented not only in ethnic backgrounds but also in dance training, knowledge, and ability. Everyone was different but the same and everyone danced in The Spirit, from The Spirit, and for The Spirit. The Mission and Purpose of Ballet International Africans is to preserve the traditions and cultural arts of the African Diaspora from its beginnings in Africa to its many branches throughout the Americas. We will use the Performing Arts for audiences and students of all ages, ethnicities and genders. We will use dance, drum, song, and folklore to create a catalyst for change in their minds. Last but not least we will unify Africans and African Americans (anyone of African descent) through the cultural arts and ancestral history we all share. There are many branches to BIA. Ballet International Africans is the umbrella company to Modupue Children's African Dance Troupe, Storm Hip hop Dancers, Awo Iyami Female Percussionists, and now, Amina's In The Spirit Dance. Ballet International Africans has performed all over the world. Some of our travels have taken us to perform on African soil in Senegal, West Africa, Rome & Grosseto, Italy, Florida, Vermont, Philadelphia, and more. We have also graced the stages of many colleges and universities such as York College, Hofstra University, Stony brook University, St. John's University, Bloomsburg University, St. Thomas Aquinas Community College, St. Joseph's College, Queensborough Community College, Laguardia Commuity College Performing Arts Center, Temple University's Umfundalani Streams Concert, and Binginham University to name a few. New York has also been our source for venues. We've performed at several local festivals and clubs with cultural music and dance as a primary focus. Some of our favorite NYC venues that we have appeared at many times) have been The Int'l Afrikan Arts Festival (Bklyn.), The Lion's Den (NYC), Marcus Garvey Park Festival in Honor of African Dance Pioneers (Harlem), The Bowery Poetry Club (NYC), John Jay College/ Papa Ladji Memorial, Baba Olatunji Birthday Celebration/ Paramount Theatre (Upstate NY), Riverside Church (Harlem), The Harlem YMCA (Harlem), The Black Spectrum Theatre (Queens), Aims Of Modzawe Cultural Arts center (Queens), Make Music New York ,(Queens location), The African Day Parade (Harlem), and The Afrikan Poetry Theatre's Annual Kwanzaa Celebration(Queens). The members of Ballet International Africans come to you straight from the heart of African- America in hopes that you will all understand, feel, learn but most importantly be inspired to create change in your life and the lives of others towards a better world. Be hungry for the culture. The drum is our Spirit. We must feed our Spirit...Ashe (Amen/ So Be It)
