I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Author of THE LITTLEST HITLER. Born in US Virgin Islands. Grew up in Skagit County, WA. Worked for a small town weekly newspaper in high school. Went to The Evergreen State College in Olympia. Then to Bennington College in Vermont. Have lived in Seattle since 1997. Have a killer awesome wife, Jen, and an equally spectacular son, Miles. Decided when I was six I was supposed to write books. Just finished a novel. Starting on a nonfiction project. Having a good time with it. Drinking coffee.

My Interests

I get a disproportionate amount of pleasure from my weekend morning coffee. I love all things media related. Books, music, movies, all the apparati that produce, market, and perpetuate them. Outside of media, I'm interested in this new field of evolutionary biology as applied to literary theory. Also interested in politics insofar as I read Paul Krugman's and Bob Herbert's columns in the NY Times religiously and have been in a state of low boil for the entirety of the Bush II administration. Also interested in Abe Lincoln, information technology, and oh yes, Iceland.

Music:

A quick inventory of my iPod reveals music by the Sounds, Wolfmother, African Pygmies of the Ituri Rainforest, Gnarles Barkley, Green Day, Aphex Twin, AC/DC, the BeeGees, Mastodon, Leadbelly, Miles Davis, Eagles of Death Metal, Edith Piaf, Spike Jones, Bjork...

Movies:

Directors: Guy Maddin, Allejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, Matthew Barney, Woody Allen, Orson Welles, Gus Van Sant, Kurosawa, Richard Linklater, Catherine Breillat, Michael Haneke, Michel Gondry.Movies: Brazil, This is Spinal Tap, Blue Velvet, Twilight of the Ice Nymphs, Being John Malkovich

Television:

I try to limit TV, and with a DVR I try to limit commercials.

Books:

Authors: Haruki Murakami, Bruno Schulz, Isaac Babel, Aimee Bender, Rick Moody, Trinie Dalton, Dostoevsky, David Foster Wallace, Dave Eggers, Don DeLillo, Pynchon, Borges.

Heroes:

Any artist who has suffered through punishing life conditions yet still managed to create beautiful art. Includes Henry Darger, Bruno Schulz, Raymond Carver, William S. Burroughs, Isaac Babel. My grandfathers were heroes to me--one an artist, the other a three-war veteran and decorated hero. Both endured in their own way.
