About Me
Steve Gilmour has been an instrumental part of shaping the music industry for the last eighteen years. From his early days on the DJ circuit, to the heady days of boyband stardom, his experience has been varied and impressive.
Always keen to be pioneer of new concepts and ideas, Steve’s initial introduction to the music industry was as a successful DJ in Scotland. From here, his ambition and drive lead him to the hub of a major record label. But still his ambition grew, finally leading to the structure of Backlash Management. Backlash was first company of its kind, mainstreaming Scotland’s music and media industry with the rest of the UK. It was also a UK wide regional press company, covering regional newspapers all over the UK. Within its first year clients included Virgin Megastores, EMAP, Saban (USA) Entertainment, Disney, Coca Cola, 5ive, Take That, Aerosmith and Sir Norman Wisdom.
During his reign at Backlash, Steve masterminded and the creation and development of the boyband 911, who would go on to sell 8 million records in several territories around the world and notch up 13 top 40 hits in the UK. From the audition process to the sold out arena tours, Steve’s guidance of 911 lead them to be one of the most successful boybands of the 90s.
Bands were not the only talent nurtured under Steve’s wing. Award winning songwriter John McLaughlin (Busted, Blue, 911, X Factor) was also managed by Steve for seven years. It was during this period Steve teamed up with the infamous Simon Cowell, to develop and create a male vocal duo called Mero. Mero won a coveted Smash Hit Award for best new act, and were championed by Westlife. As a manager and mentor, Steve worked with his artists but also developed relationships with key media personnel and companies. These relationships still stand today. After Backlash, Steve once again expanded his remit, creating and running Asylum Music. At Asylum Steve was responsible for the management and development of Deekay Music in Denmark. Deekay is a successful 4 studio complex with a team of five writers and producers. The vision was always for Deekay to be one of the leading production teams in the world. They are now well on their way. Their recent hits include songs for Blue and Lemar and they’re currently working with the Sugababes and with Randy Jackson on a new project for the US. However, Steve still kept his hand in artist management, steering the careers of girl band Misteeq and solo star Darius. Artist development was very much part of Asylum agenda, nurturing young artists to develop their natural talents.
It was during this period that Steve pioneered the world’s first digital only recording deal with Universal Music, using all available technology as a means of marketing and distribution. Steve and Asylum also joined forces with music heavyweight Lou Perlman (Backstreet Boys, NSync, Britney Spears) and Transcontinental Records to work as the UK management arm for US5, an American based band. This project also included communication and development with MTV Europe and the German TV production companySteve’s latest challenge has seen him set up SGM Music Consultancy, moving back to Glasgow in January Steve has already created a strong commercial club circuit all over Scotland to encourage more UK and US pop acts to tour Scotland and the North of England. By working closely with all the key media throughout Scotland this will help to ensure that major projects are able to succeed and then grow out of Scotland once firmly established.
