I recall the "death house" was a separate stone building in the yard of the overall facility. As you entered the door youwas confronted by a set of holding cells (I seem to think there were about 4 to 6 cells and they were arranged in a circular pattern).
This is where the condemned would spend his last day before execution. To the right of these cells where 2 more rooms,one located directly beside the other and both had entrances from the holding cell area.The prison at Joliet provided the prototype for the West Virginia Penitentiary.
It was an imposing stone structure fashioned in the castellated Gothic architectural style (adorned with turrets andbattlements, like a castle).
Only the dimensions of West Virginia's facility would differ; it would be approximately one-half the size of Joliet.
No architectural drawings of the West Virginia Penitentiary have been discovered, so an understanding of the plandeveloped by the Board of Directors must be obtained through their 1867 report, which details the procurement of a title for ten acres ofland and a proposal to enclose about seven acres.
On the north side would be a street 60 feet in width, and on the west 140 feet for street and yard to the front buildings.
The prison yard would be a parallelogram 682 1/2 feet in length, by 352 1/2 feet in width, enclosed by a stone wall 5 feetin thickness at the bottom, 2 1/2 feet at the top, with foundation 5 feet below the surface, and wall 25 inches thick.
At each of the corners of this wall would be large turrets for the use of the guards having inside staircases, withguardrooms above and on a level with the top of the main. The superintendent's house and cell buildings would be so placed, that the rearwall of each will form part of the west wall.Veau Residence
The Veau family has sighted apparitions and heard noises, including loud rappings and bangings, inside their house. Heavy wood doors haveopened and closed on their own.
The children have reported feeling drunk and dizzy and having upset stomachs.Jason, Grant and Steve meet with Mark Veau, the homeowner, who shows them the stairway post where an apparition of alittle boy was seen.
In the formal dining room and in the basement a man's voice has been heard calling women's names, including "Ginger"(perhaps a reference to the house's history as a brothel).His daughter saw the outline of a man in her bedroom. In the master bedroom, a man burned to death in his bed, but therewas no evidence of a fire and the door opened by itself when Mark's wife had her hands full.
In the tower, a friend heard a clunking noise and found the medal that was around his neck bent and on the floor.Steve plays two audio recordings for Jason and Grant. One sounds like someone saying, "Hey," or "Come here." The othersounds like a creepy laugh.
He also plays video footage that shows the camera which was placed in the tower being moved.Jason and Grant show Mark the tower footage and play the audio clips. Some "UNEXPLAINED NOISE"
Get READY TO RUN!"Holy Shit Dude" I'm OUT OF HEREeeeeee....!Bucksteep Manor
Jason, Grant and Steve meet with Heather, a chef at Bucksteep Manor, a bed and breakfast built in 1897.In the kitchen she has seen someone who looks like a monk peer through the door. In the basement, girls have had theirhair pulled and a knife was thrown into a hole but wasn't heard striking the floor.
In the common area, employee Cora Mitchell saw the apparition of a man lying on the couch after all the guests had gonefor the day.
A former manager saw the figure of a monk go into Room 5, and the daughter of an employee saw a monk in robes near thechapel.As Jason and Grant drive around in a golf cart hoping for a sign of the monk, they catch signs of movement on the thermalcamera but aren't sure what it is.Brian and Steve go into the chapel. Steve feels one of the pews shaking.Jason and Grant crawl into the hole in the basement and find insulation that would prevent the knife from making noisewhen it was thrown there.
Grant feels some tugging from cobwebs there that might explain the reports of hair being pulled.After analyzing the footage Steve shows Jason and Grant two thermal images. One is a hot spot that they decide is probablyan animal; the other is footage from the golf cart, which is similar to a finger crossing through the camera's view.
Steve also tells them of his experience with the pew.Jason and Grant inform Heather that the chapel was built as a tribute to an Episcopal priest; it's possible that peoplehave confused priests' robes with monks' robes.
They tell her about Steve's experience and explain about the insulation and the cobwebs.
Jason and Grant agree that the building has an interesting history but can't say whether it's haunted. Regardless, Heatherthinks there's a presence there.NEXT WEEK THE SHINNING RESULTS!In highlights from the live investigation, Jason, Grant and CM Punk of ECW start in Room 217 (where Stephen King stayed).
CM Punk says that earlier he heard kids playing nearby, but the manager said there were no kids checked in. Brian andSteve investigate the room.
They detect high EMF readings but can't trace them to an electrical source, and they find a cold spot.In the ballroom Dustin sees a shadow, and the room gets cold even though no windows were open. … As Brian and Steveinvestigate the music room (which wasn't open during the first investigation) they think they hear music around the piano.
Jason and Grant check out Room 401 (where Jason slept before) and hear music that seems to emanate from the bathroom.There is an employee passageway built into the side of the mountain. When Jason and Grant investigate, they hear a pianoplaying and a voice laughing and saying "Hello."
They get a text message from a viewer suggesting that they call for Katie, who died there when she was 12.Dave Tango, Steve and CM Punk go to the billiard room, where they hear noises that sound like people talking.
They feel the temperature drop when they ask for the sign of a presence. … In Room 412, where a woman became possessed ayear ago, Dustin and Donna get high EMF readings.While Dave Tango and Steve are in the Manor House they hear creaking and footsteps and feel cold zones.Dave Tango, Brian and Steve analyze the footage. They listen to an EVP from the tunnel. Steve catches footage of a camerafalling on the bed in Room 401 and notices a face there.
When they play the camera footage for Jason and Grant, they realize that the face is not a paranormal spirit.
The team talks about their personal experiences and conclude that the hotel is haunted.
Grant says it earned a "place in their hearts," and Jason says they'll come back and investigate anytime."THE CASTLE"The TAPS team (except for Steve, who's afraid of flying) heads to Ireland to investigate Leap Castle.After they arrive, Jason and Grant meet with Barry Fitzgerald, a TAPS affiliate member, who gives them a tour and tellsthem that the entity in the castle was identified as an elemental spirit.
He describes a face like a decayed corpse accompanied by the smell of sulfur. In the banquet hall he tells them that otherteams have seen a manifestation of the elemental as a lady in a red dress on the balcony.
An old access corridor is marked by the strong smell of sulfur where the elemental has been seen.Barry takes them to the "bloody chapel," where people have seen a priest who was killed by his warrior brother, and whereenemies of the castle were thrown onto spikes in a holding pen called an oubliette.
On the grounds there were sightings of monks; Barry shows them the rectory ruins, where he saw the solid figure of apriest behind the door.During the investigation, Brian and Barry go under the rectory ruins. There Barry hears a noise and Brian's eyes water.
In the access corridor, Barry notes a drop in the barometric pressure. Brian catches a shadow moving around on-camera.When Dustin and Dave Tango are in the "bloody chapel," they get high EMF readings, a cameraman says he got pushed, andDave sees a greenish-blue flashing light the size of a tennis ball move.
Later they see a face with a hood and a beard (which Brian claims he saw, as well), and Dustin gets knocked down in theoubliette shaft.When Jason and Grant hear about what happened to Dustin, they go back to the chapel to investigate.
Grant descends into the oubliette and tries to provoke the spirit while Barry listens to the wireless audio set up in thechapel.
Jason hears something walking and running that sounds like furniture being dragged; Barry runs up the stairs because hethinks that the elemental is about to attack Grant, but everything is O.K.Brian reviews the video footage. He notices that the shadow he saw on-camera was not an apparition.
After Steve listens to the audio recordings at TAPS headquarters, he plays three recordings for them over the phone.
The first sounds as if it's saying, "What's that," the second sounds like footsteps from the "bloody chapel," and thethird sounds like a woman's voice.Jason and Grant meet with Barry Fitzgerald and Sean Ryan, the castle owner, and tell them about their findings.
They share the footage of Dustin being shoved and play Steve's audio clips.
Jason says that the castle is haunted, but he and Grant agree that the haunting is not by a negative entity.OFF to BERMUDA to INVESTIGATE the BERMUDA TRIANGLE! AN UPCOMING EXCLUSIVE FROM THE HISTORYCHANNEL SERIES
