About Me

'Good art is not what it looks like, but what it does to us.' - Roy Adzak

Myspace Layouts - Myspace Editor - Image Hosting

Hello all. I've devoted this site to my instrumental work. I do write all sorts of songs too but that's another story. The tracks on the player are from my 'Scapes' collection. The idea is that you are meant to listen to the music and imagine yourself into the landscape or seascape or spacescape.

I hope you enjoy my artwork. The photographs (some of which were taken by my husband too), drawings and paintings are all a small moment of my life which goes towards making me who I am.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: barbarahills.co.uk
Band Members: "Well, all I have is me, and I have to do the best I can with that." - Marty Feldman.

I use a variety of instruments plus a sound module and sampled sounds with keyboard and a plethora of different types of software. I studied piano but mostly play keyboard and acoustic/electric guitar plus a bit of mandolin, violin, autoharp, bowed psaltery, harmonica, melodica (anyone remember that?), all sorts of recorders and tin whistles, and many odd and peculiar non-tuned percussion instruments. I'm no good with brass though or anything with a reed and definitely not anything with a double reed.
Influences: GENERAL: The Great Outdoors. Landscapes. Trees. Gardens. Photography. Cinematography. Films. TV. Natural History. Animals. Artists - particularly painters of landscape.MUSIC: The Shortlist only - pared down to the bones.CLASSICAL: Grieg, Sibelius, Vaughn Williams and Rodrigo. - no it's impossible to write a list because I keep thinking of others I can't leave out so I'll stop.FOLK: The Guo Brothers and Shung Tian. Maddy Pryor singing anything. Alan Stivell. Andy Irvine - especially his Eastern European gypsy phase.FILM & TV: John Williams. Mark Snow. Jim Parker.

Bettie Ross says that what I write should be called 'ALTERNATIVE CLASSICAL' and I think she is probably right. Definite classical leanings but including other sounds and influenced by other genres. MySpace doesn't give one the choice of 'ALTERNATIVE CLASSICAL' so I've had to make do with 'fusion'.
Record Label: Soon.
Type of Label: Indie

OKAY, THE SECRET'S OUT

Hi everyone Well, as I said on the profile page, I have devoted this site to my instrumental music but perhaps the time has come just to mention songs.  I don't consider myself a singer/songwrite...

MELODY

My music is often about illustration and ambience but I am not ashamed to say that I love melody. I think melody has been rather neglected of late. What do you think?

ODD MUSIC

Why is it that people prefer really simple, odd and vaguely obnoxious music - like Landfill Tango - to tracks you've slaved over!  Come on musicians and non-musicians - tell me!&nb...

Hi all.  I know - I'm a bit late posting a blog aren't I.  For some odd reason I checked under 'blog' and found that a really good friend had subscibed to mine - even though I've written not...
