SONS OF SOIL offers green reggae -- music and energy celebrating a world on the brink of change.
Band visionary Andrew Wilkins founded the band almost ten years ago to share a message of Earth redemption through music, drawing from his background as an environmental journalist and reiki [energy] healer.
Formerly based in Memphis and the Virgin Islands, SONS OF SOIL is now rooted in Portland, Oregon -- a city recognized as a global leader in the green movement. The band stands with six members: drums, bass, rhythm guitar/vocals, lead guitar and two sister soul singers, and is ready to share its fresh, unique interpretation of reggae with the West Coast and beyond.
The music represents the full spectrum of human emotion and reggae: from evolutionary roots grooves to light and joyful ska jams. Influenced by Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and a lifetime of spiritual seeking, SONS OF SOIL offers insightful, catchy lyrics designed to inspire newcomers to the movement, while lifting the spirits and easing the burden of those working for much-needed change.
Drummer David Jacob has played with several African and reggae bands in Portland and throughout the US. A healing arts professional, he also plays the tabla around Portland, having honed his skills while living in India. Lou Butts has traveled the world and US playing reggae bass for Little Women and several other bands. He plays with African/reggae band Susuma and is studying green technology. Lead guitar Dan Biegel recently moved to Portland to pursue music, after graduating from college where he played fullback on the football team. A student of shamanism and African liberation, Queen Bead sings with SOS and is a outspoken advocate of marijuana legalization. Visionary/lead vocalist/rhythm guitar player Andrew Wilkins is also a professional hypnotherapist who is back in Portland after refreshing his Caribbean roots with a year-long stint at a newspaper in the British Virgin Islands. Originally from Memphis, he is thankful to have linked with such a talented, diverse, wonderful group of musicians.
