REVIEWS OF "CRYSTAL VOYAGE" DEMO
Daredevil Records
"Aluna from the UK is a fucking great Doom Metal band. Retro fuzzy guitar riffs, sounding like lava, a heavy bass and slow drum beats give that band a heavy basement. They did slow Stoner Rock, but the special point on that band is the female vocals. HIGHER STATE starts as a Doom packed riff-monster and turns into a groove monster with mighty vocals from Soph. The song will be out on a Catacomb Records compilation too and will be one of the highlights on it – I know that. 5 minutes of slow and groovy Stoner Doom! The following SONG OF THE SUN is slower, again with a mighty Doom riff and will be out on a split 7†with Japan’s Queen Elephantine. I hope that I hear more from ALUNA soon!"
Desert Rock"This little 3-track CD comes from England and was mixed/mastered in Birmingham, the city of the original, legendary Black Sabbath members. Obviously, how could we miss that point? Therefore paying paying a tribute to this legendary band seemed inavoidable. Far from being a pale copy or a doubtful clone, Aluna has distinctive features such as a sweet, siren-sounding female voice. It clearly appears that there is heaviness proper to this region where the steel industry used to be prominent before it went bust during the 70's. You can also find some 80's NWOBH plans in the songs but the musicians intelligently avoided all this puffy hair, tight pants, irritating high pitch characteristics of this scene. The band will be putting out one of the songs in a compilation as well as in a 7'' split CD (with Queen Elephantine) on Catacomb Records shortly. Aluna should not hesitate to explore the full sound spectrum even if it goes over the edge. Wish you all the best, mates!"

"Fresh from the home of thee olde riffe, the Aluna/Catacombs Records bandwagon has been gathering pace steadily over the last 6 months or so – here’s a chance finally to see what all the fuss is about with a three track demo offering. Let’s eat. There’s no hanging about either, Aluna lay their cards on the table fairly early on here with ‘Higher State’ , a classic Sabbath style elephantine riff marks it’s territory in a suitably low and lazy fashion before it’s replaced with a more uptempo snaking rhythm packed with plenty of groove. There’s definitely snatches reminiscent of early Gonga in here too – this could be partly down to the vocal approach being similar - Soph’s softly softly tones caress the ears in the verse sections before the aforementioned riff crashes back in and punishes them with another sonic burst of goodness. ‘Song Of The Sun’ has more of an Orange Goblin feel to it, particularly with the attention grabbing intro/outro that truly kicks ass. Closing the cd is the 96 second long ‘Not The Only One’ that lays down yet more solid stoner/doom foundations before letting the guitar solos fly off to a wah-filled distant land one last time. Of course this also means we now will be expecting great things from the forthcoming debut album next year with a markedly beefier ball busting sounding blast. No pressure…!

"Due to the song titles, the psychedelic cover artwork and the band name, it's obvious that Aluna don't play brutal sludge or black metal and when I noticed that they have a female vocalist suddenly I remember Mourn who released a very good album on Rise Above in the 1990s. Aluna have a slightly doomier sound, although they have lots of Sabbathian grooves and riffs, Soph's lovely vocals are making the sound much softer, and so all three songs are spreading a very relaxed vibe. Crystal Voyage is a nice start from a talented band. "Song of The Sun" is my favourite one off this demo we'll see what the future brings..."

"Higher is a real cool doom-tinged rocker. Once again the female vocals add something unique to their sound"

"This song starts with an old fashioned Pentagram-ish doom riff, but when the chorus with its smooth female vocals sets in it becomes something quite different. Almost like Blondie doing a Black Sabbath song, or something... this band’s sound is so interesting I will be watching them from now on"
Pick Up Yorkshire Newspaper
"...fresh take on psychedelic/stoner music from bands like Aluna, featuring the vocals of Sophie Willett adds to an album which echoes with depth and diversity"

TROUBLE / RISE TO ADDICTION / ALUNA - Wolves Civic Bar

"Local metal band Aluna got things underway with a promising set of original material. This Sabbath inspired four-piece are fronted by a female vocalist whose singing style possessed shades of Budgie’s Burke Shelley. Aluna’s stoner fuelled metal had some interesting musical touches that work surprisingly well, such as the jaudicious use of the tambourine, which shimmered over their brooding riffs on occasion. Overall an enjoyable set from a band just starting out on it’s musical journey"

"One of the supports, Aluna, were also pretty good in a kind of psych/stoner/doom Orange Goblin/Goatsnake way and made up a little bit for the other two support bands which, while not bad, didn’t really work for me"

"In contrast to the local geography is Aluna. Undulating and pleasantly rolling, these Brum groove peddlers seem the perfect antithesis to the previous set's youthful exuberance. Pausing only to swig from a pint of some godawful looking concoction, the band's singer is the obvious focal point, adding a grand old set of lungs and some lady swagger - uncharacteristic to the desert rock genre - to the more characteristic sweaty fucking hairy dude aesthetic. Musically, a watertight performance. Hazy west coast psychedelia meets loping desert grooves meets a more traditional hard rock (go on, doom if you will, you devil) sound, native to the band's hometown. A bit of Jefferson Sabbath anyone?"
