About Me
An avid sonic experimentalist with a penchant for electric guitar textures, rock, folkblues, humor and politics, Jeff Creamer began showing up on Boston and Cambridge, Mass. stages with a signature blend of Stonesy acoustic slide, echo/looped vocals thru guitar effects, prepared lap steel guitar compositions and homemade background tapes churning out the sounds of helicopters, crickets, Reagan, monks, and shortwave radio. Several termed this mixture of avant-garde sounds, rootsy acoustic songs, sci-fi psychedelia and electronic narratives "cyberfolk" or "spacefolk".
Throughout the years he has explored, and occasionally even been among the early settlers of, a variety of sonic terrains: from the vanguard of unapologetic lo-fi psychedelia torturing the first generation of 4 track cassette recorders (often with future Hell Toupee/Squid guitarist Chip Sheppard), to his Eno-meets-Warhol "Urban Candid Mic-ing Series" manipulating Boston city sounds live via microphones thru guitar stompboxes directly to tape as a finished product, the self-penned Buddhist Folk Songs program delivered at the World Fellowship Center in N.H., early use of stomp-pedal/pitchshifters onstage thru a vocal mic with his spacerock sojourns and Laurie Anderson-inspired electronic prose, to the ’cyberfolk’ solo performances described above.
Luckily for the listening public, slightly more ’conventional’ offerings followed as he accidentally began writing lots of pop/rock songs, with 2 self-released ep’s recorded with Charlotte, NC drummer Rick Murray, the 3 Chapel Hill experimental/rock duos Gilchard’s Jaunt, Aviary Pirate Radio, and the imaginatively named Jeff Creamer + Drums, and finally, the Excursions series’ solo guitar loop improvisations of the mid 2000’s. Along the way, he has also provided sonic background noises on roommate’s demos and live performances (from the Berklee Performance Center, to accompanying poets and slideshows, to sitting in with national jamband Shockra at a houseparty, Beggars Banquet artists June, etc.), the odd indie movie soundtrack or two, and production advice to friends’ projects. His song "Plow" got him to the Finals round of Musician Magazine’s last national Best Unsigned Band contest. The last 4 years have also seen him expand into film editing, acting as chief editor for the Chapel Hill Team’s "next wave" double- and triple-frisbee video shorts, several of which are available in very lo-res versions on youtube:
Jeff recently moved from Chapel Hill to DC and is readying 2 full-length (online only) releases; "Phonecall To Landlord" from the new instrumental Excursions series (hear its most accessible piece, "Picnic", above), and an as-of-yet unnamed compilation which will include "Engineering Our Escape From Heaven", the other 3 songs at the top of the page, and 10 other goodies, including a decadent live performance of the Gilchard’s Jaunt classic "E Mysterio" at the Cat’s Cradle. After a period of exclusively focusing on instrumental guitar pieces, Jeff is also looking to have a DC-area recording and/or live band in his new environs assembled in the coming year, as well as lending his guitar work to local DC bands and singer-songwriters.
So, welcome to any new listeners, and many many thanks to the varied supporters, detractors, and often amused audiences in Pittsburgh, Boston, Chapel Hill, and now DC/MD/VA, throughout the years and the multitude of musical incarnations. Your support is, and has always been, thoroughly appreciated, so thank you all! Enjoy the tunes and spread the word. more to come.....
