Rob Heron is a young singer/songwriter from Penrith, Cumbria. After spending too much time in hard rock bands in his early teens, Rob decided to unplug and tackle the Cumbrian music scene alone…with his acoustic guitar, obviously. Rob’s influences include Mike Scott (of The Waterboys), Nick Drake, Jens Lekman, Kings Of Convenience and also some of his local musician friends, Paul Harrison and Paddy Rogan.
Rob recorded his first EP, “Morning has come…†in 2006, which received great reviews, but nothing quite beats his live performances. After playing various music festivals last year, Rob is set to play Solfest ’08 and Kendal Calling this summer. Rob is frequently playing venues all around Cumbria, including support slots for Nancy Kerr & James Fagan and Justin Adams.
As well as playing in other people’s venues, Rob organises, promotes, coordinates, compéres and drinks at, his own Acoustic Nights at Penriths’s café, No. 15. These nights are highly recommended, for pure excellence in music, food, drink, and atmosphere. Get yourself to the next one by checking the website, www.myspace.com/no15cafe.
Rob is well known throughout Cumbria for his feisty, high energy music, his punchy blues and his spirited vocals. With a very powerful repetoire of original songs, and the odd amusing cover, he can keep an audience well entertained in most circumstances.
Rob has recently recorded his second self-released CD, Korsa Floden. A seven track album of songs about love, snow, sun, and rain. He launched it at No.15 cafe on March 20th along with a double headliner gig with Oli Deakin from the Leeds-based band, Samsa.
Born out of a trip to Sweden to study the country’s musical traditions, the album’s name means ‘cross the river’ in Swedish. Rob says: “I’d never heard Swedish folk music before, but when I did..I was in love..."
The album provides a showcase for Rob’s manifold talents, fusing punchy folk-pop guitar with languid layered vocals. For Rob, inspiration can come from anywhere. Album track Cross the River was sparked by a dream he had where he was separated from his friends in Sweden by just a river rather than the hundreds of miles that keep them apart.
Meanwhile, Introspection is a tongue in cheek response to a comment from a well-meaning critic: “I played a gig and my music teacher was there. He said a lot of people in the crowd were saying that my songs were a little bit introspective. I think it was just an observation but I took it as a criticism and wrote a song about it.â€
Other than performing by himself, Rob plays fiddle and mandolin with Kathryn Tickell’s Gateshead-based youth folk ensemble, Folkestra. Folkestra are due to play at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms in July.
Kärlek från Rob
