About Me

Beauty, eloquence, parity, and community cheiftan are just a few words to describe Bessie Akuba Winn. A southern belle by way of Ghana West Africa, Bessie moved to Atlanta at the age of 7. The exeedingly well rounded Winn holds a B.A. in Political Science from Georgia State University. With an extensive background in beauty and pageantry, Bessie was a contestant in the 2003 Miss Georgia USA pageant and a finalist in the Today's Black Women Magazine Beauty Competition. In April of 2006, Ms. Winn was crowned Miss Black Georgia USA 2006. The philanthropic beauty used her reign as a vehicle to create an awareness about teenage domestic violence, as well as an empowerment tool for past survivors. Ms.Winn devotes her time to the non-profit "BreakFree", an organization she co-founded that aims to promote and educate the nation about teenage domestic violence. Bessie has been featured in periodicals such as VIBE Vixen, the Atlanta Voice, Rolling Out, and was selected and featured in the July 2007 issue of EBONY magazine as one of the nations top Bachelorettes. Bessie Winn is a professionally trained actor that has studied at Nick Conti's Professional Acting Studio, The Alliance Theatre, and the Premiers Actors Network. The love for acting that Bessie has, has landed her roles in Feature films, commercials, and local theatre productions. Winn serves as a role model utilizing her gifts of public speaking, mentoring, coaching, acting, and singing, as an afflatus to the world. Miss Winn says that....."Achievement most often takes place under conditions that are less than ideal. Just because there is some problem or difficulty or shortcoming in your life at the moment, it does not prevent you from moving forward"... PUT YOUR ABOUT ME SECTION HERE! So many phenomenal women come to my mind when I think of my Heroes/Sheroes becuase they all have so many wonderful characteristics..but here are a few... Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou is definitely a phenomenal woman and a hero to me because she has the voice that knows oppression, struggle, beauty, and tenacity. She makes it clear in all of her writings that it is not about how one falls but it is the way in which they get up. My pastor, the Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Hale. Pastor Hale has inspired me in so many ways just by her journey as a woman to the calling she is in. She exemplifies what it means to be a woman of God and not allowing the world you live in define who you are supposed to be. And of course my Grandmother and my Mommy......too many words to express why...
