IRON PEGASUS RECORDS - Metal Record Label of the heaviest kind, from "Hard'n'Heavy" to blackest Black. Faithful to the old Underground and traditions, loyal to the bitter end!
How it all started?Addicted to Heavy music since 1985 when SCORPIONS and IRON MAIDEN obsessed my innocent soul. Then there was no turning back!
Soon I got into heavier stuff and when I heard SLAYER's "Live Undead", the gates to the Underground opened and I was trapped. Lots of great bands to experience, ordering fanzines, buying demos and seeing new bands rising from the underground and making great extreme and heavy music. Fuckin' exciting times!In 1993 I started my own "fanzine" called TALES OF THE MACABRE , taken from an old SLAUGHTER (Can) song.
I realised that there was a renaissance of the old values and the old spirit of BATHORY, SLAYER, HELLHAMMER, VENOM, etc. , so the mag was born to hail that new (old) movement that was not only remembering those old days but also the days of traditional Heavy Metal of the early 80s.
The magazine lasted until 1999/2000, after 6 issues.In 1998 , not really planned, the label IRON PEGASUS RECORDS was born.
When I did an interview with Cult band SABBAT, their bandleader Gezol sent me a promo of his still very unknown side project with the crazy name METALUCIFER and it blew me away!
It was in the pure NWoBHM-tradition, something very rare in those days when traditional Metal was not so popular anymore. It was an old but very fresh wind from the far east! Perhaps a bit exotic but still unique and definitely outstanding, both in sound and image.
As nobody really seemed to care about METALUCIFER in Europe the idea came to give those maniacs some extra support, so we agreed on releasing the album "Heavy Metal Drill" as an European version. This was the day when IRON PEGASUS (first name was only PEGASUS, but there was a label around with the same name back in the 70s) was born. To our surprise, people seemed to like METALUCIFER and started to get interested in this crazy Japanese Metalmachine, something that is has not been typical for Japanese bands.
When you look back nowadays, METALUCIFER in a way created a new interest in pure old Metal and were a sort of trendsetters for other new bands to hail the word Heavy Metal, although they might not conciously realise this!The main band, SABBAT also had no deal and except for a European CD version of their debut album Envenom, all their material was self-released on EVIL Records. So now it was also time to helpgiving SABBAT some more attention to release some of their old material. Then their new album "Karisma" followed, so this was SABBATs first new full-length album that was not self-released.
After the Japanese domination some other bands followed, like PENTACLE, SADISTIC INTENT, etc (just to name a few) which all still were known from the days of TALES OF THE MACABRE.The first bigger release was when in 2000 german band and great friends DESASTER agreed to release their new album "Tyrants of the Netherworld" on the winged horse. A legendary release party was held in Koblenz (Germany) where DESASTER celebrated their new album on stage, with support bands and friends PENTACLE and METALUCIFER who played their very first gig here. Really a night to remember with great live bands and an almost neverending party!Alot of names , again still known from old issues of TALES OF THE MACABRE (some of them as new Demo bands back then), worked with IRON PEGASUS after that release... such as MORTUARY DRAPE, AGATUS, DOLMEN, HADEZ, DESTROYER 666, etc.A very proud moment for everybody was in 2001, when DESASTER performed in Wacken in front of thousands of screaming bangers (unfortunately this was the old singer's last gig... a moment and triumph and tragedy at the same time) and then in 2002 when both SABBAT and METALUCIFER were booked to enter the Wacken stages. The first Japanese bands ever to play on this festival! This was really unexpected, because you rarely see bands to play on the festivals who are on a small label with no proper (shop) distribution system.Unlike many other labels, IRON PEGASUS has never sworn to a specific style of Metal.... it does not matter if it is Heavy Metal (Rock), Death Metal, Thrash or Black Metal. But in a way so far all bands at least have a Traditional sound.
The unexpected has to be expected. While METAL KING fulfilled all cliches for the pure Metal hordes, you cannot get any blacker than the great INQUISITION horde or any deathier than PENTACLE and if you want to thrash till death, get powertrashed by MESSIAH... and if you are only interested in classic history, get an overdose of cult songs from the mighty Death Metal tyrants MASSACRE.IRON PEGASUS is one of the last older labels that still sticks to the old Underground and its sound. Times are hard when you don't follow the trends and prefer to stick to certain principles and values, releasing material that might not bring instant success while refusing offers from bands that may bring glory at the same time.
But as long as there are some die-hard maniacs out there the wings of steel will ride the sky, bringing you more metal mayhem from around the globe.
