About Me

I am a mother of two.. my oldest is Shelbi who is eleven years old and Jared who is six years old. They are the lights of my life. Jared was diagnosed to be on the higher end of the Autism Spectrum. For whatever reason, this was not devistating to me. It was hard to accept at first but it was never something I saw as being that much of a henderance. Once I knew what was going on, I talked to people, did research, found hundreds of great friends here on Myspace and have more than accepted it now... I try to advocate whenever and where ever I can.
Autism is a neurological disorder that effects communication and social skills. It is often referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (and in some cases Asperger's). The range or severity of Autism varies in each person it affects. Some can be very high functioning (verbal and interactive, seemingly "normal") or some could be in the lower functioning end (non-verbal, odd gestures, cannot respond to command). The range between the higher functioning and lower functioning is very broad. It has been proven that Autism affects boys more than girls and the new statistic is 1 in every 150 or.... if you break it down further, Every 21 minutes someone is diagnosed with Autism. If you don't know someone with Autism yet, you will. There is no known cure for Autism but therapies (speech, occupational, etc.) can help Autistics function in society today.
We have only just begun the battle to fight this disorder. There is so much more that needs to, and can be done. Help us by joining in our collective voice to make others aware and informed! Noone knows who the next child will be who is affected by Autism, but it is so important to recognize signs and symptoms early. Some symptoms that you may recognize in early developmental stages are; lack of speech, lining objects up (cars, blocks, etc.), poor eye contact (if any at all) & seemingly unaware of dangers. These are just a few...
If you would like to know more about Autism, ask me... I'm more than willing to share anything I know. I welcome any and all friend requests but please, be sure your profile has something to do with Autism or I probably won't add you unless you write a message along with the request. I also have a web site for Autism Graphics, you can Visit My Site Here !
Many people do not know the term "stimming" but most parents of autistic children do. If you don't know what it is, please take a look at my blog about it. Below is how my son, Jared, "stims", he can watch these logos for hours, and these are only two of about three dozen he has found on YouTube.

Thanks to REO Speedwagon for the autographed picture for Jared!! He has one just like the one above except his wasn't just a fan pic sent out... we wrote the band and told them of Jared's disability and how much he loved them so the web master for their site spoke to the members at a Christmas party and all but Bryan Hitt autographed the pic (Hitt-man wasn't present at the time although he is one of Jared's favorite band members). We also wrote Styx but they never responded (sniff sniff). Jared loves his picture, so thanks again REO!

Music:

REO Speedwagon, Styx (especially their Arch Allies tour!), anything Top 40 on the radio (he'll sing every word and in tune!!), anything live.... Jared loves to mimic drummers, guitarists and keyboardists, imagine his delight with REO and Styx!

Movies:

Toy Story 1 & 2, A Christmas story, Scooby-Doo, Stuart Little.... just to name a couple lol

Television:

The SuperNanny... which is great that he loves it just as much as I do!!
