In the spring of 2004 Black Root, and
Wordslave embarked on their musical journey as a group. The duo, which calls itself AXIOM, takes a well balanced approach to its performance style. Black Root, an actor, poet, and lyricist is an avid student of the Hip-Hop culture who always steps on stage with the energy necessary to move the crowd, and a swagger to know that he can do so. Wordslave, actor, poet, vocalist, and lyricist, adds the talent of singing to the equation which gives the group a soulful versatility that helps set them apart from other Hip-Hop groups. There is an infinite number of influences but the list includes the likes of Outkast, Cee-lo, Rakim, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Kanye West, MC Lyte, Jay-Z, Dead Prez, Notorious B.I.G, Busta Rhymes, 2Pac, Phonetic Armageddon, The Roots, Wyclef Jean, Common, and A Tribe Called Quest just to name a few. Their fist recorded project entitled Wordslave and Black Root presents: AXIOM the Mixtape was a solid introduction to the groups niche for clever songwriting, strong delivery, and thought provoking lyrics. Anyone hearing AXIOM for the first time whether in the cd player or on stage can expect to be an active participant in the performance. Its also not uncommon to leave the venue singing for days. AXIOM's focus is to provide balance in the world of Hip Hop which has become highly commercialized, and as a result has seemingly lost sight of some of the important aspects such as quality of content and skill.
