About Me

Hello. My name is David Llewellyn. I am the author of three novels: 'Eleven' (Seren, 2006), 'Torchwood: Trace Memory' (BBC Books, 2008) and 'Everything Is Sinister' (Seren, 2008). Here's some nice stuff that people have said about me:"In offering a dark comedy, Llewellyn shows more taste than do many more earnest seekers of artistic relevance... Llewellyn's novel is a funny and disturbing view of a disaffected age." -Nicholas Clee, The Guardian... "Llewellyn skillfully and poignantly reveals the complications and evasions of the characters' relationships . . . Eleven is a compulsive read, and I devoured it in one sitting, unable to put it down . . . It's easy to imagine this becoming a cult book for the disillusioned younger generation." —Ray French... "A micro-mezze of human emotion, Eleven thrusts snippets of love, trust, and disappointment into the mix and proves that the knock-on effects of petty office politics can be disastrous." —Gay Times... "(Everything Is Sinister) is an adroit but powerful take on a society in which sex and violence have been commoditised, and in which the media can wreck or redeem an individual in an instant." -Ceri Radford, The Daily Telegraph... "His style is so engaging, his world so credible and unsettling, that I defy you not to reach the very bitter, bloody end of this engaging read" -Attitude Magazine.

My Interests

Films... books... films...visual arts... films... the occasional trip to the gym to get the endorphins going and make sure I'm not too hideous with my clothes off... music... films... books...

I'd like to meet:

Anyone interesting really. As you can see, my tastes are a bit eclectic, so I'm always over the moon just to meet anyone who likes some of them!

Music:

Amon Tobin, Johnny Cash, Missy Elliot, Stravinsky, Miles Davis, Bulgarian folk music, Buena Vista Social Club, NWA, Mozart (Donny G is the best!), Cream (the overblown late 1960's psychadelic supergroup), Beck, South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, The Go Team, The White Stripes, Mister James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, David Shire's soundtrack to The Taking Of Pelham 123, John Cage's 'Sonata's And Interludes For Prepared Piano', David Bowie, John Taverner, The Beatles, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Nass El Ghiwane, Gustavo Santaolalla, Iggy Pop, Phillip Glass, Beirut

Movies:

Singin' In The Rain, Taxi Driver, The Untouchables, Russian Ark, Casablanca, Blade Runner, Hero, Downfall, City Of God, Die Hard, Ealing comedies, Citizen Kane, The Third Man, just about anything directed by Stanley Kubrick (yes, even Eyes Wide Shut), Pinocchio, Doctor Zhivago, The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, Wild At Heart, Jaws, There Will Be Blood... too many to list without it getting boring.

Television:

The West Wing, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Deadwood, Doctor Who, Nathan Barley, I Claudius, and... ahem... Top Gear. I'm a recent convert to The Wire, which, it seems, is a work of utter genius, though I'm only 3 seasons in so far.

Books:

'L'Etranger' by Albert Camus, 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes, 'Don Quixote' by Miguel de Cervantes, 'Notes From Underground' by Fyodor Dostoevsky, 'Old Goriot' by Honore de Balzac, 'Down And Out In Paris And London' by George Orwell, 'The Twelve Caesars' by Suetonius, 'Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas' by Hunter S. Thompson, 'London: The Biography' by Peter Ackroyd, 'Watchmen' by Alan Moore

Heroes:

I used to have a list on here as long as my arm, with names like Rosa Parks et al. People like that are heroes, of course, but the person I look up to most these days is probably my Dad. Altogether now... "Awwww".

Such a perfect day...

I woke up yesterday morning on the other side of town, so I'll leave you all to draw your own conclusions from that. The sun was shining, and the first commuter trains, no doubt carrying colleagues of...

Paul Newman, RIP

One of the most beautiful men who ever lived, and one of the great film actors of his generation, Paul Newman, died today. There's not much I can say to it or add to all the plaudits and superlatives ...

He’s not the man they think he is at home, oh no no no...

Without wishing to dwell on the professional shortcomings of David Blaine, I just saw this, and it kind of proves my point. Yves Rossy jumped out of a plane 8,000ft above Calais strapped to a jetpack,...

What I Think Of David Blaine, by David Llewellyn, aged 6

A little over five years ago my friend Ben and I were strolling down the South Bank, towards Tower Bridge, when we came upon a man in a perspex box. "Look at that," We said, "It's a beardy man in a pe...

Camelot & Walford

Did anyone see Merlin? What did you think? I might have to hold back most of my judgment, on the grounds that I seem to have been wrong about the BBC's flash "alright, our kid?" version...
