"The Odd Ball" began life on 9th May 2005, in the b-bar (downstairs cafe/bar of Plymouth's Barbican Theatre). The aim of the event was simply to try and help open what was often viewed as the closed shop of cabaret, theatre and performance. A monthly attempt to provide a platform for those with an urge to entertain, without necessarily having had previous experience or opportunity. The atmosphere has proven to be enjoyable, informal and extremely laid-back. As the blurb says "From Party Piece to Polished Performance" anything is considered and everyone welcome. Since its beginning, "The Odd Ball" has played host to many a debut and old hand alike, with inspirational acts including Acoustic solos, duos and bands, poetry, rants, stand-up comedy, monologues, dance, poi-twirling, magic, music hall singing, DJing, underground film shows, cheeky cheezy keyboards, and first ever attempts at bizarre instruments! Still on the lookout for much, much more (puppet shows? play readings? contortion? spoon-playing? gurning?). If you live in, or are ever visiting the Plymouth (UK) area... pop in to the next "Odd Ball" for a pleasant, relaxed, entertaining, inspiring and DIY experience. The stage is free and the mic is open...
