About Me

Hi5 Layouts by Pimp-My-Profile.com

Slipstream Time Travel began when I, Marc Edwards, began playing locally here in New York City. The idea had been knockingaround inside my head for a while. When the band was a trio, I would introduce it to the audience as "Slipstream Time Travel." The name stuck and I continue to refer to my band by this name. I left David S. Ware at the end of 1991. I wanted to go out on my own. The first performance was a trio consisting of Rob Brown on alto saxophone and Vattel Cherry on bass. Later I added alto saxophonist, Cara Silvernail, when we recorded the album, Time and Space, Vol. 1. Hilliard Greene was the bassist on that record date. I believe Vattel Cherry had moved out of New York City. The second peformance I did was a duo with Daniel Carter at the same location. Daniel plays saxophones and trumpet. We did a duo at the Chase Manhattan Bar & Grille between 12th & 13th Streets in lower Manhattan. I later added bass player, Hilliard Greene. Hilliard had worked with Charles Gayle however, he wasn't included on the Charles Gayle Silkheart Recordings. I always felt that he should have been on those albums, but, that's life in the music business. The personnel of the band continues to change as player come and go for various reasons. The core members of the band have been playing together since 2000 or earlier. Prior to the year 2000, Tenor Saxophonist, Sabir Mateen, did the chores on the horn. Sabir is doing his own projects these days, however, we are able to get him when he's not busy. Sabir Mateen worked with us from 1994 to 2000 and shortly during 2001. Rock guitarist, Peter Mazzetti worked with us while Sabir Mateen was in the band. He has sinced moved to the West Coast. Although I regret his departure, fate has been kind. Tor Snyder came and started hanging out at the band's performances. I decided to let him do the chores on guitar, but only after I was certain that he wasn't working with Dennis Warren's Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble. I'm not in the habit of stealing musicians from other bands. That's been no problem. Tor is right at home playing in this group. Ras Moshe continues to stir things up musically along with Jame Duncan on trumpet. I'm very fortunate to have such talented musicians in my band.Checkout my interview at allaboutjazz:http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id= 20296If anyone wants to book my band, please contact me at my yahoo account: [email protected]. I'll get right back to you. I don't hang out here as much as I have in the past. Gotta stay focused on the music, practicing, etc.Lately, I have been working with Jeffrey Shurdut and his various ensembles. The first performance we did is available as a CDR. It's called "Live At Tonic." That show was on August 30, 2006. I liked that show. We had a very large ensemble of musicians on that project including Blaise Siwula among many others. That CD is available from Cadence Records at http://www.cadencebuilding.com/

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: myspace.com/slipstreamtimetravel
Band Members: Tor Yochai Snyder - Electric Guitar (formerly a member of drummer Dennis Warren's FMRJE (Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble), Ernest Anderson III (Ernest has his own band under his name), Jeffrey Hayden Shurdut - piano, and me on drums.
Influences: Influences are too many too list. Here's a brief rundown: Blues, Gospel (especially sanctified music often found in black Baptist Churches), Jazz, Classical Music - the great Classical composers, Electronic Music. Is there anyone out there who doesn't enjoy the sound track of the sci-fi classic, Forbidden Planet? Or how about The Day The Earth Stood Still? I like the sound of the theremin, the moog syn., and music of the world from all cultures, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Quincy Jones, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Tony Williams, my main man, Elvin Jones, Eric Gravatt, Alphonse Mouzon, Roy McCurdy, Shadow Wilson, my friend, mentor and tutor, Leonard "Lenny" Nelson, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra? and other Jazz greats, African Drum choirs, Indian tabla drummers, other drummers from indigenous cultures, Master Frame Drummer Glen Velez, composers in Hollywood - television and motion pictures, science fiction, and many more. Jimi Hendrix and other blues, rhythm & blues artists. This will be updated as I think of more folks. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the ESP Records I heard during the sixties. Yes, I'm heavily influenced by the Free Jazz, Avant-garde, the new thing, Black Revolutionary Music and other titles the music was called back in the day. Also science, the exploration of outer space, NASA, the Planetary Society, the Hubble Space Telescope photos - aren't they awesome? I was heavily influenced by my first visit to the Hayden Planetrarium in New York City while I was a child. If anyone wants to book my band, please contact me at my yahoo account: [email protected]. I'll get right back to you. I don't hang out here as much as I have in the past. Gotta stay focused on the music, practicing, etc.

Sounds Like: It depends upon you, the listener. Here's how I hear what my band is doing: at times we play very free, then it's on to latin, african sounds, traditional Jazz, Classical music overtones, and on some days the music can have New Age tonalities. I can't get inside your head. Whatever you hear is unique to your DNA structure, how you were raised, cultural orientation, etc. My band, Slipstream Time Travel makes music, not noise! During live performances the band attempts to create as many audio soundscapes not unlike artists when they use colors to create moods in their paintings.
