Below: NME REVIEW FROM TAPESTRY FESTIVAL 2006. As you can see Blitz and Jiggy have morphed into Tracy from Mystery Meat!
Says it all....
THE SWANKERS "We've only had two rehearsals you f*cks, so tonight will be f*cking sh*t." Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the wonderful world of the Swankers. A world where tourettes is compulsory learning in school, every hour is midnight and copies of How To Win Friends And Influence People lie burning by the side of the road. When berating one's audience finally becomes a bore, team Swank launch into gear, with terrifying results. Like Ari Up fronting a Raw Power era Stooges, they tear the arse out of anthems dedicated to second division male groupies, the joys of afternoon boozing and the, let's face it, unlikely prospect of an appearance on Top of the Pops. When proceedings are halted momentarily to replace a mutiliated amplifier those of us still in attendance are treated to a joke about date rape and maggots in apples. The charm offensive doesn't end there ...the guitarist dedicates tonight's final number to "all you c*nts who stuck around". It's title is beautifully succinct: "F*ck off!" Pure f*cking genius! ARTROCKER MAGAZINE, 19 January 2006
SUPERSWEET REVIEW 93 Feet East 21/06/06 QUOTES:: "Next time, bring a friend... or friends," Ryan, the androgynous guitarist instructs his couple of ten or so fans tonight. It's a shame they're on so early that hardly anyone turns up for it. Otherwise it could have been a rather fun show as their kind of music feeds off the audience and constantly requires interactions. Things do pick up half way though when some bloke claps his hands, only to be told off, "Shhh! The guy in the back is trying to read!" SOUND: If you check them out on MySpace, you will find a comment from Jason from The Von Bondies: "Now this is what i've been waiting for... Balls/ovaries out rock and roll". This is exactly it! Two girls are ex-members of the now deceased Dirty Burds and they're having a hella good time from what we could hear. If this doesn't convince you, try listening to the song 'Fuck Off' and you'll understand. APPEARANCE: They supported Towers Of London and recently played Tapestry Festival. It's the music and attitude that come first for them. After all, what else would you need when it's pure testosterone and er... oestrogen! WORDS: T. Bellamy http://www.dudesweet.org/ss_Swankers_gig.htm
NME REVIEW Tapestry Festival, Margam Park, Wales, Sat July 1st 2006. (Shame the silly arses accompanied the review with a photo of an axe weilding Tracy from Mystery Meat instead of our howler Jiggy...that'll teach em for wearing almost identical stagewear!).......THE BEST BANDS AT THE BEST FESTIVAL....THE SWANKERS..."Oh god who booked us?" asks the mini-skirted and hot-panted singer of The Swankers, who, with a Noel Fielding-alike on guitar, rattle through a chaotic set of garage-rock before collapsing in a wailing heap on the floor!
REVIEW ON losingtoday.com... http://www.myspace.com/deathpoprecords - not much info on this - well in truth we stumbled over it by sheer accident. A new label catering for ’desperate artists’ well that’s what it says on their site - first release is by all accounts a killer split featuring the Swankers and Atomic Suplex and well we do wonder whether this feisty little baby has all the makings of being the best split release this year (or any year for that matter) - you decide - oh yea can we blag a copy please…….oh yea just in case you were wondering what these upstarts sound like well……
http://www.myspace.com/fuckinswankers - oh my - so decadent its hurts, this thumping slice of bargain basement low production rawk ’n’ row is sure to appeal to lovers of the Mummies and early career Mono Men - a bracing whiplash serving shock of fuck you caustic trash punk pop with the frankly quaint and to the point ‘fuck off’ shredding the ears like an early career incarnation of the Babes in Toyland twatting the living shit out of Suzi Q. elsewhere the riotous vomit strewn frazzled road kill that is ‘outta my head’ is a totally wired and out of it Ramones shimmying up to Shonen Knife and the Shaggs to kick seven shades out of the Shirelles - a blistering prime slice of pyrotechnic puke pop while bringing up the rear ’top 10 hit’ is a festering fuzzy fuck up crawling out of the primordial ooze of mid 60’s garage punk. Loveably loutish - more please.
LASTEST REVIEW ON losingtoday.com....The Swankers / Atomic Suplex ‘Split’ (Death Pop). Those of you with radars acutely tuned may well recall us falling arse over tit in devoted admiration on accidentally stumbling across the Death Pop my space page a few weeks back (missive 142 to be precise), this London based imprint headed up by Becky Blitz (we suspect not her real name) is in its short infancy so far proving to be a much needed shot in the arm for the underground scene. While others are jumping on the merry go round and chasing the same quick buck returning ensembles, as with the likes of the esteemed and respected (here at least) Marquis Cha Cha and Art goes Pop, Death Pop is quietly going about in a manner befitting all classic DIY labels and extending the view finder above and beyond the cheap hype machine and attention seeking luvvies and in so doing is uncovering the misfits, the oddballs and the plainly crucial head turning talent that the underground scene has to offer. Already stumping up to their credit three long since sold out releases in the shape of Brain Washington, Carry on Satan Vs. the Electric Tumour and Rocktopus Vs. Thee Abbatoir (top name eh?) - all over which we’ve foolishly missed no doubt causing many a sleepless night until we have them in our mits and belching big time on the turntable - the next record rack rumbling outing sees a gloriously bad assed basement boogie face off between the Swankers and Atomic Suplex. Haven’t a clue how many of these babies there are about but safe to say they’ll sell out faster than sh*t of a hot shovel, the Swankers step up to the plate with the short, sharp and sweet totally radio unfriendly ‘fuck off’ - a total (and dare we say) much needed car crash of a cut that hones in on the whole shoe string and play it ineptly philosophy of the Mummies and still - to these ears anyway - sounds like a bastardised early career knuckle dusting hot-rod Mono Men backing a spiteful spat between the Babes in Toyland at their most unforgiving and a running for cover fast Suzi Q. Flip the disc for more riotous rawk courtesy of the scowling and totally mental Atomic Suplex, ‘atomic suplexed by a girl’ is so delicious dirty and sleazy sounding you’ll be hot footing it for a shower the minute its run its course and left your beleagured hi-fi in a state of nervous wreck - scuzzed up fuzzed up carnage that insidiously takes its cue from Bad Afro bad boys Sweatmaster as were with a hot poker shoved up their backside and taps into the early back catalogue of the greased up garage trashing unholy trio of Mudhoney / Halo of Flies / Dwarves. Absolutely essential sell a relative if need be - you need this. www.myspace.com/[email protected]
BREAKING NEWS FROM KIRSTEEN....Gideon Coe mentioned the Swankers on his show last night - I was just listening to last night's show on Listen Again on the internet........sounds like he was reading out a listener email about the Raveonettes show and the person said they were brilliant as were the two support acts The Swankers and whoever esle....... SINGLE OF THE WEEK 03.12.07: (A) FUCK OFF / THE SWANKERS (AA) ATOMIC SUPLEXED BY A GIRL / ATOMIC SUPLEX (DEATH POP RECORDS).... http://www.artrocker.com/node/957..... Kicking off with a banshee scream that embodies pure hedonistic evil, ‘Fuck Off’ is the kind of super-speed garage rock that gets Japanese girls riding motorcycles naked. Like the demented cousin of ‘Fell In Love With A Girl’, it takes under two minutes to slap you in the face, scrawl lipstick down your cheek, kick you in the nuts and throw you off the roof.Meanwhile, label mates Atomic Suplex dispense with the formalities (read: the tune) altogether, preferring to unleash one and a half minutes of pure offensive distortion. Both these bands are rare things of beauty – and deserve your ass for dinner.p
