BIO
As the world of Get Licious grows, lead singer and songwriter Matt Wise has Miss Universe to thank for it.
Hired by the Miss Universe Corporation in New York to return fan mail, Wise, offered advice to young people who would contact the pageant queen in hopes of getting tips on success along with an autographed picture.
"A guy from Florida wrote me a beautiful sonnet once. I kept it."
After performing on New York City’s Lower East Side for many years, Wise decided it was time to trust his instincts and move in with a girl after dating her for 3.5 weeks.
"It’s an excellent way to start a new band," says Wise, "when things fall apart your old band can’t be mad at you because you went and stranded yourself in LA like a dumbass." Which is where Wise met Dakota and McConnell while playing solo gigs.
"Here was this guy singing reggae-ish songs about stalker chicks and hummus-stealers and his grampa’s leisure suit," Dakota said. "We immediately clicked."
The trio quickly found themselves on the legendary stages of such Southern California staples as The Viper Room, The Knitting Factory, and The Roxy, and attracting what Flavorpill LA has called "a fiercely loyal audience."
Get Licious then moved into the recording studio, working with producer Alek Edmonds (Modest Mouse, The Afghan Whigs) on an eponymous record mastered by industry vet Ron "Spider" Entwistle (Pink, Daft Punk, Third Eye Blind).
The band’s unique blend of rock, reggae, and funk led to a production deal with Groovetree Recording, and Get Licious’ first single, the infectious Bedroom Window, was chosen for the compilation CD John Romano’s Best of Los Angeles Podcast Vol. 2, which led to the band signing a deal with Romano’s Avant Garde A Clue Inc. label to release Get Licious worldwide on iTunes.
This would lead to two songs appearing on MTV’s The Hills, two songs appearing on the CW’s Runaway, and two songs appearing on ABC’s Cashmere Mafia.
