Seattle Hempfest

3rd Weekend in August- ALWAYS

About Me

Seattle Hempfest is the largest annual political gathering in support of harm reduction and drug policy reform -- the world's biggest pot rally.

Seattle Hempfest is held the third weekend in August. This year's event is August 16-17, 2008 at Myrtle Edwards Park on the beautiful Seattle waterfront, just north of Pier 70.

Event hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Admission to Seattle Hempfest is free.

We feature five stages with a wide variety of entertainment and education. Past performers include Kottonmouth Kings, Source Of Labor, Los Marijuanos, Prezident Brown, our house band the Herbivores, Fishbone, Gruntruck, Children Of The Revolution, The Toyes, Second Coming and 7 Year Bitch. Past speakers include Woody Harrelson, travel show host Rick Steves, former all-pro Dallas Cowboy Mark Stepnoski, author and columnist Ed Rosenthal, Libertarian Party Presidential candidate Michael Badneric, former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, NORML founder Keith Stroup and the Hemperor himself, Jack Herer.

The event features hundreds of vendors -- the perfect place to snag summer dresses and stylie threads, get new glass, dig on some grubbin' munchies, and generally hempify your life.

Hempfest is powered by an all volunteer staff. One thousand volunteers are needed week-of, with 100 core members working year 'round to pull off the massive endeavor. None of us are paid, and neither are the bands and speakers. We do this because we believe strongly that cannabis hemp is a healing plant and can contribute to a future based on respect for the earth and its inhabitants. We believe drugs and drug dependency are issues of public health, not criminal justice. We believe the War on Drugs is a war on people, and that we must not sit by idly while this failed public policy imprisons our brothers and sisters.
We've established a relationship with the city of Seattle that no-one can rival. We’ve been praised by the City Of Seattle Special Events Committee, the Seattle Fire Department, the Seattle Police Department and the Port Of Seattle Police Department. The Seattle Hempfest was also instrumental in helping to pass Initiative 692, which legalized medical marijuana in the state of Washington and Initiative 75, which made possession of small amounts of cannabis the lowest police priority with the city limits of Seattle.

We charge no admission fee into the Seattle Hempfest, drawing all our operating fees from donations, sponsorship, water sales and vendor fees. So, if you come to the Fest, help to support us by throwing a few bucks in those directions.

Updates:

On the various contrivances of Hempfest '08 - January 16, 2008

Friends! The time has come for me -- your humble servant Wade G -- to update you as to the going-ons of the one and only Seattle Hempfest. That is my humble and honored duty as your Hempfest myspace attaché. Perhaps you noticed my hiatus, my winter break, myspace lacuna. Perhaps not. Some of you did for sure, -- I read the emails eventually.

The thing is, it's sometimes easy for me to forget about the myspace. Sometimes my mind gets a bit cloudy and I get all tangental, you know? And then suddenly I'm in the downtown library trying to read everything they have about the plateaus of central and eastern Turkey, or some such craziness.

Mostly though, I attribute my duty deriliction to sudoku, that fun little number placement game -- love it. You'd be surprised at how long I can, and do, get baked and play sudoku. I sometimes can't believe it.

But get this, the myspace friends may be easy to ignore. Like the email, if I don't check it, it don't bother me, right? But then, Hempfest core staff meet regularly, and approximately god damn all of them have myspace pages and every third person at the meetings is like, yo Wade, where's the myspace love, brother? And it's a joke -- right? -- but then there's those few folks who are like, but no seriously, where's my myspace love? Eep!

So right, back on track Wade! There are things some of you want to know about. And I know almost most of the answers! So let's get to it.

Performers

First, we're getting a bunch of musician inquiries, the main question being, how does one play Hempfest? The good news is that info is on our handy dandy web site . Basically, mail your demo in. Our entertainment jury will listen to it, and contact you. Everything else is at that link.

You can certainly ask me to listen to your myspace, and then you can be like, hey Wade from the Hempfest Ecology crew likes our songs, and you'll have that going for you. But I'm not really in the rock star part of the Hempfest world. Because Hempfest, man, is just one big corporation, man.

Vendors and Sponsors

Vending sales open March 1, 2008. February is "Returning Vendor Month" when returning vendors may order their same booth. Our vending crew is gearin' up for opening day. They have very kindly asked me to inform potential vendors about two new things for 2008.

First, our payment policy has changed. Vendors may place orders with a credit card, or they can choose to pay later. In that case, they have 30 days to pay half, and 60 days to pay in full. Those sound like pretty good terms to me.

The Vulcan, who works on the vending crew, said to me in his typically unvarnished style, "we're basically gambling on math that asks, how many of these people will screw us?" I'm like, do you say these things to vendors? And the Vulcan's like, I think we named it the "Will You Screw Us 50/50 Net-60 Policy Wolicy." I almost believed him, and didn't think him fibbin' until I checked the web after the meeting. It's totally not called that, for the record.

In all honesty, I forgot what the second thing was. Totally my bad, sorry vending crew. I guess the best I can do is smoke a bowl and remember to link the Hempfest vendor store . :)

Volunteer Staff

You know I love you, right? Yes you, the potential Hempfest volunteer. Come here and give ol' Wade a big huggily wuggily! (HUGS) That's from the whole Hempfest crew, a virtual hug to stick in your myspace or up your yahoo.

This year, our staffing crew made a sweet Hempfest staff page . It's somewhat huge and daunting, but it's still pretty sweet, listing every public crew in Hempfest. Once you get a sense of what you're interested in doin' for the 'fest, you can hop on over to the Hempfest Staffing Universe and sign up for your shifts.

Remember Wade's advice: sign up early, and sign up often! Okay, maybe not often, but definitely sign up early. You can log in to the Staffing Universe at any time and modify your shifts. You can see how many bodies have signed up for various shifts. You can view the entire Hempfest staffing structure. All in all, it's a small mind f*ck, if you ask me. And I thought I heard you ask, heh.

Other than that, the only news I can think of comes from my neck of the woods. We renamed the Garbage and Recycling crew. It's now the Ecology crew. Doesn't that sound so much more awesome? Like instead of picking up other people's trash, you get to save the planet. It's almost like you're sharing that Nobel Prize with Al Gore, right? As if working alongside the esteemed Wade G weren't incentive enough. Ecology, represent!

That's all for now, dear friends.

Keep your head high,

Wade G
