Some reviews of Electric 03

CD OF THE WEEK (Brag Magazine, June 08)

"My favourite mix from an Aussie ever, surpassing the Honkytonks retrospective from Mike Callendar et al.

Sydney’s dance music cognoscenti hold Ben Korbel in extremely high regard, and this mix explicates exactly why the Sounds head honcho has the reputation he does. It is quite simply one of the best mixes I have heard in a long time.

Perhaps most impressively Korbel does not overplay things at any time – the mix is ostensibly quite simple, but it builds with every track in a manner akin to the DJ mastery of auteurs like Eddie Richards. It begins with some serene, deep and melodic tracks like Cassy’s “Sumlightuntothenight” before things shift towards jacking tech house without ever shedding the melodic feel of the mix’s beginning. The middle third of the mix is an absorbing conflation of influences, as the deep jacking sounds of yesteryear meld with minimal techno undertones of the present underground scene. It is only in the final few tracks that out and out minimal techno in the form of Ricardo Villalobos et al emerges to cap off a journey of the highest order.

Rather than being a collection of banging floorfillers this is a master class, a demonstration of how to build and develop a set – there is a real sense of purpose and progression to this. Anyone interested in quality underground dance music must buy this CD."

4.5 / 5

DMC Review - Essential Listening

"Third in the series sees Australian DJ Ben Korbel excelling himself with a sublime mix of finely-woven deep techno and house which mingles current and classics to intoxicating effect. Hard to believe that, although he's been at it for around a decade, this is Ben's debut but his experience in rocking parties around the world shines through a selection which includes names like Luciano, Gray Cassy, Swayzak, Strike, Villalobos and Freaks [with 'Discorobot']. After setting up a luxurious, dreamy vibe he starts piling on the pressure around the time of Der Dritte Raum's 'Luna Llena' and Matt O'Brien's 'Serotone', peaking with LFO Vs Fuse's monstrous 'Loop'. It doesn't hit you over the head but works insidiously, establishing its own personalised form of dancefloor abandon. Marvellous."
