Oli and Andy first met through a mutual friend at their local sixth form college in Essex. Both played and sang in separate guitar bands, Oli in the popular beat combo The Wayfarers (then known as Crayola) and Andy in a band called Velcro. A couple of years later Andy headed to university in Sheffield and, possibly due to his increasing preference for techno and house music, Velcro called it a day shortly after he completed his course. He then moved to London, got himself a second-hand computer and some synths and, inspired by Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Orbital, set about composing melodic techno pieces. Some labels showed some interest and XFM’s Nick Luscombe played some of his material but unfortunately the material remained unreleased.
Meanwhile back in Essex, The Wayfarers were building a loyal following on the Essex and London music scene. They had some label interest but, sadly, when the new millennium came along, they seemed to have entered an extended hiatus.
After a while, for the first time in many years, Andy started writing songs again. His aim was to fuse contemporary electronics and beats with engaging melodies and lyrics. Or more simply, accessible songs with contemporary influences.
He put together two tracks called “Superenlightened†and “In Minuscule†and asked Oli to record the vocals. Recorded in Andy’s front room, “Superenlightened†was picked up by Urban Torque Recordings as part of a 2 album deal and released in 2005. Including a remix by Circulation, it was the BBC website's dance single of the week when it was released and was played by loads of top DJs like Pete Tong, Sasha, John Digweed, etc.
In early 2006, Andy wrote the lyrics and vocal melody for a track by Superbass (DJ Paul Harris who used to be in Dirty Vegas and is now one of Kylie's producers and Jay P who is also known as half of Stretch N Vern). Called “Solutionâ€, Oli recorded the vocals in March that year. “Solution†was released in February 2008 on Toolroom and was aplyed a number of times by Pete Tong on his BBC Radio 1 show and also picked up an Essential Mix play.
Also around that time, Urban Torque, entered into a joint venture with the Eye Industries label for their next single “Your Tiny Mindâ€. They eventually mixed the single with Dave Bascombe at Metropolis Studios in Chiswick in October 2006. Unfortunately the relationship with Eye Industries was not productive, and Relation pulled out of the deal in October 2007.
Andy has since moved back to Essex and Relation have spent the last two years gradually creating and perfecting an album's worth of material. Over the first half of 2008 they have been recording the material with producer Richard Kayvan. Hopefully the album will be completed for release in late 2008.
They are also currently working on a second Superbass collaboration which will hopefully see a release later this year.
