MISSION STATEMENT
13 HANDS/NOMADYOGA
is an integrative education, yoga, arts, music and professional/personal development company built upon the passion to create health awareness and inspire through education, yoga, mind-body health, music, the arts, environmental consciousness, empowerment and motivational programs.
It's founder, Daniel McBride, aka Dalien, is a 2007 Grammy nominated musician and Yoga Professor at Montclair State University. His unique background has allowed for a seamless integration of various lecture, teaching, health and music related presentations in arenas such as: corporate wellness, stress management, personal and professional development, education, arts related venues, yoga workshops, teacher training, retreat centers and health care venues.
Based in Montclair, NJ he serves as adjunct professor of yoga at Montclair State University and has presented lectures, yoga, stress management, sound healing/music therapy presentations and performances at the following venues: Daughters of Israel, Gilda’s Club, Greystone Psychiatric Hospital, Price Waterhouse, Renaissance School, Montclair Public Schools, Abraham Clark High School, Ananda Ashram, Omega Institute, New Life Health Expo, Better Your Body and ECA Fitness, along with speaking alongside, well respected nutrition expert, Gary Null.
His commitment to life, yoga, health and education stems from his amazing journey of 20 years and 27 health professionals responsible for rebuilding his health and immune system, eloquently captured in his book, “How To Become A Rock N Roll Yoga Jedi Knight in Just 20 Years”. Whether he’s conducting various lectures, classes, workshops on yoga, stress, raw foods and/or sound related programming, his experience, loving and humorous approach and “real-life” wisdom make him an informative and respected teacher.

13 HANDS, Daliens' alter ego, is a one man, ambient, instrumental world music and folk-rock singer-songwriter. On his new double CD project “The Johnny Introspective” and “Thetaland”, he creates an eclectic mix of instrumental, tribal, ambient world and folk music styles that provides a “musical Pink Floydian mattress for your mind” as you might actually find yourself completely stress-free by the concert’s end! Dalien, is a 2007 Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, plays over 20 instruments from various cultures, has a song co-written by John Mayer and has shared stage with a diverse range of artists from Laurie Anderson to Paula Cole to Tuvan Throat Singers.
With his diverse background in world, healing and contemporary folk music, along with serving as a Professor of Yoga at Montclair State University, he’s been able to integrate his music and health credentials into an educational, health management and entertainment mission…..as he’s been branded as the “Yogi Rocker” about town.
Actually, he’s just a regular guy with several degrees from the school of hard knocks, perseverance and adversity. As a teenager he suffered and overcame a very difficult health crisis along with facing the tragic, emotional loss of his father in a plane crash. These life changing experiences transformed him into an "old soul" of sorts, literally overnight. Dalien credits these life events as the catalyst that put him on the path to exploring music and yoga as healing modalities today. "To heal is to learn to love and accept oneself from the deepest place within your heart. The process is ongoing, but it's the committment to the work, the growth and compartmentalization of the Ego into a balanced place where one realizes the soul's mission is to leave something behind that assists in evolving the human race forward....even though sometimes it feels like we take a few steps back now and then... gotta be an optimist on all levels!"
If one were to put Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Native American and ambient, world percussion music in a blender, then you've got an idea of his vibe. The music is CHILL…..and REAL as the ambient and vocal textures seem to create a relaxed, hypnotic-like state. After listening you may feel compelled to buy Dalien a sandwich, be his best friend or loan him use of your yacht for the weekend. His lyrics smack you over the head and shakes your heart with undeniable truths. Its impossible to hide from these songs and sentiments....... hence his "What If Floyd Met Freud" mantra…..Are you ready for this couch?
Songs like "Take the Blue Pill" make you feel like you've stepped into a sonic time zone. Bombs, sirens, etc. could be going off around you and you'd still be entranced by the guitar textures. On "Big Lie", he turns rock prophet as he creates a Velvet Underground-ish meets American Bandstand retro vibe with a cutting, introspective lyric exploring various themes surrounding procrastination, social manipulation and avoidance. Basically, his songs are about opening the door to personal reflection, as Utopia cannot truly exist until personal Utopia has been achieved.
Whether the live setup is a concert, a health/stress management lecture or an integrated yoga/mind-body presentation, he approaches his live events with the enthusiasm of an exploring child in the wilderness. His musical setup is extremely innovative. Its’ like he’s built his own miniature spaceship by incorporating various pedals, sound effects and his trusty IPOD. On stage he's takes on the role of improvisational, ambient, mad scientist whose functioning as if he has 13 Hands.....and feet....as he uses them too.
13 HANDS has shared stage with a diverse range of artists from Run DMC, Paula Cole and Morley to Laurie Anderson and Tuvan Throat singers from Tuvo, near Mongolia. He's worked with BIG NOISE, an artistic development, internet marketing company whose credits include: Christina Aguilera, Chicago and Patti Rothberg to name a few. His career spans 5 records, national touring, anti-hunger awareness work creating Music Against Hunger, an effort to raise money for food pantries across the US.
13 HANDS is a classically trained musician, been writing songs it would seem since he was in diapers and is proficient on the following instruments: vocal, guitar, bass, drums, piano, tabla, native american flute, wind chimes, gyli (Balafon), hang drum and various world musical instruments, percussion.....and of course CHANTING AND SOUL SINGING rooted in the tradition of Hindu, Native American and Shamanism.
THE DEEPER MEANING OF 13 HANDS? 13 HANDS is linked back to the Malaysian Martial Arts forms. It’s not a fighting style, per se, but rather 13 energy positions in which to hold the hand that will generate and focus chi when implemented into the practice. I have always known that the creative voyage is rooted in divine, creative energy. The name really just resonated with me and complimented the vibe of my creative vision….so I stayed with it.
