I thought that I would take this time to give a little history behind myself, and the song, "As High As The Moon". Well, maybe, I'll explain more about "As High As The Moon", and then perhaps you'll know a little bit more about me. In 1988, I watched a video of Lee Brown, a First Nations member of Cherokee background, who gave a talk at the 1986 Continental Indigenous Council, Fairbanks, Alaska. The transcript of this talk is available at several sites on the internet. In this talk, Lee Brown explains an ancient Hopi Prophecy:
"You're going to see a time when the eagle flies its highest in the night, and it will land on the moon...This will be the start of a new day."
Actually, this video sent shivers through my body, and made my hair stand on end. Since this time, the image of the moon and the eagle was firmly planted in my mind. Then in 1990 and 1991, I was dating a girl named Harumi. She came from the Japanese country-side. I asked her why she wanted to study English. She said that she wanted to see a wider view of the world than the provincial life in which she grew up. She inspired me. One day in early 1991, I had the image of the eagle and the mouse, and the first verse was born. I came back to my mountain shack that night, and started playing some chords and a melody, and the rest of the lyrics just flowed out.
Not soon after, Harumi and I broke up, as Harumi's mother opposed her daughter dating a foreigner, but I thank her and Lee Brown for inspiring the song.
In 1992, I started sending the song out to lots of music industry people around the world, and throughout the 1990s, I had posted it on several sites on the internet. Coincidentally, the Black Crowes had a tour in 1993 called the "As High As The Moon" tour, although no song actually existed. I suspect this may have been a coincident. However, between 2001 and 2004, several artists and bands have come out with songs with similar or identical titles. Not only that, many of these artists/bands seemed to have lifted the main musical rift and/or hook. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you view it, they were not inspired in the way that I was. Therefore, I feel their songs were lacking the spiritual essence and message of the original.
Anyway, after doing a little research, I did discover that one of the artists in question did hear my song (which, by the way, is and was registered with the library of congress) before that artist(s) supposedly wrote their song. I have kindly requested to the artist(s)'s lawyer to cease and desist such activities several months ago, to which I have received no reply.
As an artist who has invested a rather large fortune in demos and production costs, as well as my personal integrity, I have no choice but to ask for the artist in question to come clean. In the meantime, I hope that you (the listener) enjoy the original "As High As The Moon", and the message it was meant to convey.
Love & Peace,
Andy
