Hello, there. My name is Stephen T. Colbert (the "T" stands for Truth, of course). I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, the cultural center of the South. I was the last of 11 children. I graduated in the top 47 percent of my class at Dartmouth, where I majored in history and performed with the all-male a cappella group, "The Sing Dynasty".
After college, I took a year off to travel around the world. I went everywhere: England, Ireland, Scotland even Wales. Keeping a journal of my travels helped me develop a deep appreciation for the field of journalism. When I returned to the States in 1987, I had acquired a lifelong passion for news, so I took a job as a fact checker at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. My editor was amazed when I single-handedly exposed the largest mail-fraud scam in Virginia state history; I still don't trust the U.S. Postal Service to this day.
Thanks to my new acclaim as a "man of the people", I was quickly snapped up by Richmond's WVBX-TV news, where I spent three years as a field reporter. I was voted "Sexiest Local Newscaster of 1989" by Virginia Living magazine and raised almost $600 at a charity bachelor auction.
After jumping around various areas, I finally settled on Raleigh, North Carolina's WKJC Channel 5 News, where I worked the state capital beat for seven years. In that time, North Carolina tourism numbers rose by 9 percent... no big deal.
In 1998, beloved WKJC anchor Tyler Peterson died; of course, the station looked to me to fill the void. Though I proposed meeting the station halfway, WKJC management refused to negotiate a reasonable salary for such a rising star, forcing me to uproot my family and move back to Charleston.
After a while, I finally was tapped by Jon Stewart to join the investigative team at "The Daily Show". It was there I spent many of my future years. Eventually, I moved on to become the anchor of my own show, "The Colbert Report". I've won four Emmys, two Peabodys, two Television Critics Assoc. nods, and I received a 2003 Teen Choice Award nomination.
