About Me

Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins: A Brief Historical Overview
by Mookie Brando
I woke up in the middle of a field (corn I think) one morning. The epiphany for that day dictated that I sell all my worldly posessions, borrow a dictionary, learn to play kazoo, and find a rhyme for ’orange’ in any language of my choosing. I flagged a ride on a cart and set off east so I could tan my face. After a few days I was dazzled by tales of fish canneries and salami sandwiches. Did he really build that house with his own two hands? Such was the effect on me, that I decided there and then that the curly topped gent would be an ideal travelling companion on the road to musical oblivion. A short man in an argyle sweater gesticulated to us. This was a sure sign of dangers ahead.
Upon entering a church bearing the name of a holy relic or body part, we were surprised to hear a sweet melody reminiscent of nothing in particular, but captivating in some less-than-transcendental way. It was thus that our merry band grew in number and stature, and a young ecoliste was convinced to put off plans for his day in the sun and walk a ways with us instead. Further down the road we came across a meadow of poppies and a frustrated former figure skater who had just begun to contemplete the mysteries of men’s solo synchronized swimming. While it would be exaggeration to claim he lived in a box, a box nevertheless has remained his symbol to this day. Along with that Nehru jacket. And that silly wooden flower. I digress. Without further much ado and with only very little hesitation, he too was convinced to empty the RRSP and kick the tires to see if the glove fit.
Much time has passed since. Tree branches have drooped, rivers have run their course, beards have greyed, shadows have grown long, then shrunk, then grown long again. But if you close your eyes and listen, listen closely, you might hear them. Those drums in the distance. Then the silence. The calm before the storm. The deep breath before the plunge (where have I heard that?). But the Second Cousins march on. What choice do they have?
