Champagne Tastes, Lemonade Pockets is the
follow up album by They Walk Among Us
(TWAU). The title embodies the conflict between
a desire for the .finer things, and the mundane
realities of day-to-day living. Moreover it is a
metaphor for the background against which the
album was recorded. The title, in a nutshell,
describes the band's experience over the last
two years since returning home from a 3 month
U.S. tour promoting Mathematics, Art
in Progress.
Mathematics was enthusiastically received by
audiences and press alike, review after review
pitched them as a sound British export. Live
turnouts bolstered TWAU's confidence and
public profile as they traveled from city to city,
state to state, cultivating a dedicated fan base.
This a feat that has alluded scores of UK acts, with
vastly bigger marketing budgets. Mathematics
was licensed in North America through Aeronaut
Records based in LA, and distributed through
Redeye USA with PR by The Planetary Group.
Having performed in 36 cities across 26 states,
TWAU arrived back in the UK with new songs and
a new energy. Some songs had even been
finished at live shows and added to the nightly
setlist. These songs would catalogue the journey
from Mathematics until now. The band met after
a two month break to decide their next step.
The .rst album was recorded at Monnow Valley,
Loco Studios and Famous Studios and produced
by top producers Greg Haver (Manic Street
Preachers) and Richard Jackson (Super Furry
Animals, The Automatic). The band opted to
record and produce Champagne Tastes
themselves. They had the equipment,
knowledge and experience to do so. They spent
the next 12 months recording all the tracks,
enlisting the expertise of Gaz Williams
(RocketGoldStar) to co-produce.
Whilst the band were busying themselves with
recording and playing a dates across the UK, a
copy of Mathematics found it's way to Alabama-3
singer Larry Love. He invited singer Richard
Proctor and guitarist Gareth Clark to London,
having loved the record, and offered a support
slot on the Alabama's Outlaw Tour.
TWAU attended South by Southwest in 2006 and
were invited to contribute a track to the Oingo
Biongo tribute album Drink to Bones that Turn to
Dust. Oingo Boingo was the brainchild of
Hollywood composer Danny Elfman (Tim
Burton's Corpse Bride, Betelgeuse, Simpsons
theme tune). They recorded their version of Lost
Like This , available from Dep't of Records based
in Seattle.
Richard Jackson heard demos of album tracks
and expressed a keen interest in mixing the
single Tell Me a Secret. The band agreed having
worked with Jackson before. His work on
Monster by The Automatic had just reached 4 in
the UK Charts. The finished article was handed
to Frank Static to master. During the same period
TWAU met video director Alan Morse whose
productions had included a video for The Cooper
Temple Clause. Together they produced the Tell
Me a Secret video, and album artwork.
Champagne Tastes, Lemonade Pockets then is
both a musical and literal statement. It is also a
testament to the band's determination to follow
their own path.
