Your Old Big Broadcaster

About Me

The radio show's the main thing. Most of the rest of what I do spins off that: buying and selling records, etc. Even after 35 years, I know that I'm only as good as my last show, and my future depends on how well I do my job. "The Big Broadcast" can be heard in NYC Sundays from 8-Midnight on 90.7 WFUV-FM, and streams at www.bigbroadcast.com. Two or three archived shows and playlists are available 24/7 at www.wfuv.org.

My Interests

1920s & 30s pop and jazz, movies (not just old), TV (Dexter, Brotherhood, House, Boston Legal, FNC).

I'd like to meet:

The guy who wrote "The Stein Song."..

Music:

I like crisp, early 30s dance band records, such as Bert Lown. Hot jazz of all sorts, including Bix Beiderbecke, Red Allen, Jimmie Noone, Louis, Lang and Venuti and the Dorsey Brothers. I'm a Crosby guy, but also enjoy Al Bowlly, Cliff Edwards, Connie Boswell and Marion Harris.

Movies:

Seldom disappointed with Coen Brothers.

Television:

See above.

Books:

Read mostly music reference books. Last fiction I finished was "The Great Kisser," a collection of stories by David Evanier.

Heroes:

Soupy Sales, Howard Stern, Phil Hendrie, Bing Crosby.

My Blog

My Week in Review

My first thought was that I don't have much, but on "The Big Broadcast" airing on May 4 I promised to post something.  Ideally, something cheerful.  The last week, on balance, has been prett...

Pic & PPS

Here’s Mary and Me with "The Art of Excellence." See my problem? 3/23: Les Paul called during the show to apologize (!) for not introducing me from the stage on March 10.  (He usually brin...

Dont Get Your Hopes Up

The good news is that I’m motivated to write something for the first time since January.  That’s also the bad news. I came home not long ago very satisfied with my life.  "This i...

Russ Columbo & The Found Monologue!

It's been ages since I've written anything.  I've been tempted.  There's my perceived professional mistreatment, my official marital "going out of business" sale, and my generally roman...

Slippery Slopes & His Orchestra

It's hard to believe that someone so thick could have skin so thin.  I'm brooding over a slightly nasty remark that was posted on a Yahoo blog almost nobody will ever see.  (It's compou...

My Car Broke Its Hip

I'm much better at catchy headlines than actual content.  I thought of this one a few months ago when one of my Mercury wagon's rear shocks decided it wanted to ride inside.  I was maybe twe...

Curb Appeal (Or, Some Things Are Better Left Unblogged)

"I look like somebody who has a better looking older brother."  I was reminded of my old joke the other day reading "Awake in the Dark," a collection of short stories by one of my first therapis...

Danny Stiles & The Lost Monologue!

I was invited to be among the guests honoring Danny Stiles for his 59th anniversary in radio.  Historically, I've been billed as attending, with a variety of spellings of my surname, whether or n...

Dream On

I watch a great deal of TV.  When I was a kid, back in the tube era, I once turned on the set, made the screen black, and returned when my favorite show came on.  I couldn't wait the thirty ...

Naked City

As a kid, I remember seeing a film crew in, I think, Flushing.  My mother was visiting her friend, Ernestine, a nice woman with a slightly creepy, Peter Lorre-like husband, and a viciou...
