Russ Wilson has been called the PAUL WHITEMAN OF THE 21st CENTURY by fellow musicians and fans alike. Not just because he bares uncanny resemblance to the portly 20's and 30's dance band leader but because of the style of music his orchestra plays.
Russ and His Nouveau-Passe Orchestra are the only band in North Carolina and the surrounding areas faithfully recreating the sounds of 20's and 30's hot jazz and dance music. Music made famous by Ben Bernie, Bert Lown, Ben Pollack, Fletcher Henderson, Chick Webb, Duke Ellington, "POPS" himself Paul Whiteman and many others.
Russ and the N.P.O have played for numerous dances, parties, weddings, hotel and restaurant engagements throughout the southeast.
In 2007 Russ and the N.P.O released their second CD entitled
'SWINGIN' AT THE ARMORY." Recorded live at the Durham Armory during the Eastern Balboa Championship the disc also contains 6 tunes by the smaller Swingtette. Now into their 4th year the band is bigger and better. Ranging in size from 10 to 15 pieces (horns, violins - the whole bit!) and playing dances and concert dates. On November 17th Russ and The N.P.O. played to capacity crowds in the historic GLEN ECHO PARK SPANISH BALLROOM in GLEN ECHO, MARYLAND. This beautiful (art deco/Spanish motif) ballroom was built in the late 1920's.
Russ and the gang have started their RHAPSODY concert series off with "standing room only" performances and rave reviews from musicians and fans alike. There are plans for more concerts in 2008 and a studio recording of RHAPSODY IN BLUE.
