Rock 'N' Roll Comics, San Diego Reader

About Me

I co-founded the comic book line ROCK 'N' ROLL COMICS and wrote the majority of the issues. Made some good scratch, spent it all. Made lots more scratch as the publisher of CARNAL COMICS: True Stories Of Adult Film Stars. Together, the two titles were some of the top selling indie comics of the 90s. I also created the comic strip Rock Tales, which began in Rip Magazine and now runs in Spin.
Now I write for the SAN DIEGO READER ( Blurt, Lists, cover features, etc.), the nation's third largest circulation weekly newspaper. I also write and draw two weekly comic strips for the Reader - Overheard In San Diego (since January 1996) and Famous Former Neighbors. In addition, I write and do freelance art for anybody with $. Haven't punched a timeclock in 16 years, but I'm the busiest unemployed guy I know.
WANNA BE FEATURED IN A SAN DIEGO READER STORY???? If you're a local musician or involved in the San Diego music scene in any way, and you have an offbeat or interesting story to tell, contact me here or at: [email protected]

A documentary film was recently made about Rock 'N' Roll Comics and the murder of original publisher Todd Loren. Produced by Bulletproof Film, UNAUTHORIZED & PROUD OF IT features Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons, Mojo Nixon, publishers Gary Groth and Denis Kitchen, artist Robert Williams, famed groupie Cynthia Plaster Caster and many others - the film trailer can be viewed below, just hit play. A new book chronicles the history of rock 'n' roll/comic book crossovers, including long and detailed chapters on Revolutionary's Rock 'N' Roll Comics. CAN ROCK & ROLL SAVE THE WORLD? by Ian Shirley has lots of rare pics and art and it can usually be found on eBay or from the publisher at link below - he interviewed tons of former Revolutionaries AND rival publishers, and the resultant book is terrific. Ian also wrote about our comics for Mojo Magazine and other major newstand publications, so he's pretty much an adopted Revolutionary now. Cover art by Mike "Madman" Allred!

HEY SAN DIEGO MUSICIANS!!

I'm always trolling for stories - for my Lists column (full page profiles of local performers), for our Blurt section, for feature length articles, heck, I'll even take tips for my Overheard In San Diego and Famous Former Neighbors cartoons. I depend on tipsters sending me funny and inexplicable bits of overheard chatter. Go ahead and add me to your press release list, but what I'm really looking for are offbeat and interesting - and TIMELY - tales to tell. Good 'n' juicy stuff, printworthy, like feudin' and fighting, or wacky mishaps, or strange brushes with celebs, twisted tour tales - - - like, who's got a beef, who's pissed off and wants to vent? If you have a local gig coming up within a few weeks, that helps get you the ink (we like to end articles with a note about someplace you're appearing that same week). Offbeat photos are great too (you KNOW you took pictures of your drunken passed-out drummer with beer cans stacked from his forehead to the ceiling) - - - I'm afraid we're NOT interested in plain old "news," like your new CD is ready, or you just got signed to such-and-such label or tour, that's not our beat. Now if your CD masters were stolen by Crips, or you're suing your label, that'd be getting warmer. Like I said - offbeat, funny, topical, behind-the-scenes stuff is what we tend to pounce on. Gimme attitude, gimme gossip, gimme a link to be able to listen to your music and hopefully we can get you and what you're up-to mentioned in the paper - we do manage to squeeze in actual factual promotion along with whatever we write up. It's a big paper, lotsa people read it, and checkitout, we wanna hear from you! If you've been reading my weekly stuff over the last decade in the Reader, you know I'm not gunning to set anyone up or make story subjects look bad, that's not what I do. You tell me something off the record, it stays off the record and all that other good journalistic stuff. Talk atcha soon??????
