REVIEWS OF BARZILLA
“Edwin Decker is offensive, irreverent and inappropriate. I can’t believe I haven’t slept with him yet.â€
(Anya Marina, disc jockey, KBZT radio 94/9 FM San Diego)
“At times whimsical and wonderful, at times brutal and twisted, at other times pained and longing, Edwin Decker doesn't let you get comfortable.â€
(Dave Rolland, editor, San Diego CityBeat)
“While most poetry is filled with head-scratching “isms,†Decker’s more likely to scratch his pits and wonder whether God has great abs. He is a poet with whom you’d take a nip before converting to your own made-up religion.â€
(Troy Johnson, host of Fox Rox, Fox Channel 6 San Diego)
Music:
It's 11:13 pm and I'm listening to Wolfmother. These guys are shredders. a few minutes ago it was TV on the Radio. Yesterday it was Built to Spill. Last year it was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Tommorow it will be the Lollipop 6 for all I know. One thing is for sure though, through it all there was voice and wit of Ray Davies.
Movies:
Movies are a passion. I Wish I could make them. If I did make movies I'd emulate writer/directors like Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia), Woody Allen, Charlie Kaufman, Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show) Sidney Lumet (Network/Dog Day Afternoon). I probably wouldn't bother trying to make movies like the Coen Brothers do. Those two are nuts. Totally and awesomely nuts.
Television:
For me, it's all about HBO. They created these fantastic R-rated programs with great writing and a boundary-testing attitude and were hugely successful: The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Big Love, Real Time with Bill Maher, Larry Sanders show, and going all the way back to the beginning of HBO serials with Dream On -- another show I adored. These programs were so successful, broadcast television started to follow suit. I dig shows like My Name is Earl, Reno 911, Lost, Da Ali G Show, South Park, Celebrity Death Match, the Law and Order series, Arrested Development, and yes, even some of the reality shows like Apprentice and Survivor.
Books:
Oh jeez. Where to begin? Perhaps with the funniest book I ever read: A Confederacy of Dunces. I don't know a single person who has read that and doesn't agree. For serious books, I think the Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski is a must read. Check out Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer for real true mountain climbing adventures, Bill Bryson for studies on Americana, language, and other cultural observations, read anything by Vonnegut, TC Boyle, Richard Ford, Bukowski, HS Thompson, and how can you not love the shit out of Tom Robbins? Jitterbug Perfume and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues are straight up Masterpieces.
