'CITIZEN' is a collection of songs, a diary of events in 'Brooks' life
as an observer and a central character. Life experience is diverse
and accordingly 'CITIZEN' reflects this DIVERSITY whilst retaining a distinctive thread musically and lyrically.Brooks began recording 'CITIZEN' in January 2008, totally self financed whilst maintaining a full time and current career as a police officer. He has for good reasons as follows, recorded a dynamic cover of 'I FOUGHT THE LAW'.
BROOKS version has perhaps picked up 'I FOUGHT THE LAW' from where 'THE CLASH' left it musically, however BROOKS has introduced a unique spin on 'I FOUGHT THE LAW'. BROOKS has stolen the opportunity to mix his music and occupation as a police officer to bring a very serious and highly topical message attached to a great song.
’I FOUGHT THE LAW AND THE LAW WON’-KNIFE CRIME violence and serious anti social behaviour -ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Knife crime is the shame of Glasgow, Scotland and indeed the UK. Glasgow is one of the best cities in the world and should not be blemished by this stain.
Brooks hope's the media will pick up on this song due to it being a good/great version of the song coupled with the fact its a COP performing it. It could potentially be a entertaining vehicle for discussion, culture change and resolution, to get tough on especially violent individuals.Send the ENOUGH IS ENOUGH message everywhere. As a police officer he has seen many hundreds of victims of knife crime and indeed was a victim of a very near fatal knife attack prior to becoming a police officer.
The final decision to record 'I FOUGHT THE LAW' at the expense of
one of BROOKS own was not due to a shortage of songs, however a
DJ at one of the largest Nightclubs in, Sauchiehall Street, GLASGOW
played the song whilst BROOKS, in his official capacity
(one of STRATHCLYDE'S FINEST)
was dealing with some chaps with serious self management issues
in the middle of a very busy dance floor. The DJ played the ’CLASH’ version to the ongoing meeting of minds between the police and
said chaps, whose view on acceptable public behavior was somewhat
distorted by alcohol. This was to the amusement of BROOKS and the entertainment of a somewhat bemused audience. Whilst these individuals FOUGHT THE LAW - AND THE LAW WON; BROOKS decided in that moment to record the song, employing the reverse psychology of the sometimes urban rebel status sometimes attached to the song AND THE LAW WON!
POLICING THE STREETS OF GLASGOW "AS ROCK/N/ROLL AS IT GETS"!
