'CITIZEN' is a collection of songs, a diary of events in 'Brooks' life as an observer and a central character. Life experience is diverse and accordingly 'CITIZEN' reflects this DIVERSITY whilst retaining a distinctive thread musically and lyrically.Brooks began recording 'CITIZEN' in January 2008, totally self financed whilst maintaining a full time and current career as a police officer. He has for good reasons as follows, recorded a dynamic cover of 'I FOUGHT THE LAW'. BROOKS version has perhaps picked up 'I FOUGHT THE LAW' from where 'THE CLASH' left it musically, however BROOKS has introduced a unique spin on 'I FOUGHT THE LAW'. BROOKS has stolen the opportunity to mix his music and occupation as a police officer to bring a very serious and highly topical message attached to a great song.
’I FOUGHT THE LAW AND THE LAW WON’-KNIFE CRIME violence and serious anti social behaviour -ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Knife crime is the shame of Glasgow, Scotland and indeed the UK. Glasgow is one of the best cities in the world and should not be blemished by this stain. Brooks hope's the media will pick up on this song due to it being a good/great version of the song coupled with the fact its a COP performing it. It could potentially be a entertaining vehicle for discussion, culture change and resolution, to get tough on especially violent individuals.Send the ENOUGH IS ENOUGH message everywhere. As a police officer he has seen many hundreds of victims of knife crime and indeed was a victim of a very near fatal knife attack prior to becoming a police officer.
The final decision to record 'I FOUGHT THE LAW' at the expense of one of BROOKS own was not due to a shortage of songs, however a DJ at one of the largest Nightclubs in, Sauchiehall Street, GLASGOW played the song whilst BROOKS, in his official capacity (one of STRATHCLYDE'S FINEST) was dealing with some chaps with serious self management issues in the middle of a very busy dance floor. The DJ played the ’CLASH’ version to the ongoing meeting of minds between the police and said chaps, whose view on acceptable public behavior was somewhat distorted by alcohol. This was to the amusement of BROOKS and the entertainment of a somewhat bemused audience. Whilst these individuals FOUGHT THE LAW - AND THE LAW WON; BROOKS decided in that moment to record the song, employing the reverse psychology of the sometimes urban rebel status sometimes attached to the song AND THE LAW WON!
POLICING THE STREETS OF GLASGOW "AS ROCK/N/ROLL AS IT GETS"!

BROOKS RECENTLY ASSISTED VINNIE JAMES IN FACILITATING THE MAKING OF HIS LATEST ALBUM 'SONGS FOR THE LONG JOURNEY' WHICH WAS CREDITED AS BEING THE BEST AMERICANA ALBUM OF 2007. Whilst Brooks own music is removed from that style the experience of working with Vinnie led to BROOKS developing his songwriting. Vinnie has worked with the very biggest and best in the music business. If even a glimmer of VINNIE'S experience has shined through on BROOKS album 'CITIZEN', then something of merit has been created. Only the listener will ultimately decide that.

BROOKS formerly a bass player at the endless insistence of VINNIE decided to move to the center of the stage so to speak. BROOKS has an armory of songs varied in style but focused in real life, his and others, an area in which BROOKS in part due to his current occupation and international backpacking has had the privilege of close encounters with human extremes. Some have been Inspiring some humbling, some shocking, many amusing. Some individuals as you can imagine have been very wicked!

Brooks picked up a six string for the first time about four years ago. He set to writing songs that documented his life experiences and observations. Brooks was mindful of two comments, one by DAVID BOWIE the other by JOE STRUMMER. JOE said 'SING ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT'. Bowie once said that he was not that talented but surrounded himself by those that were. The Album 'CITIZEN' is in part a strategy based on those two approaches. It is in fact a diary or snap shot of events, social observation and human weakness. The soul and true purpose of making the album 'CITIZEN' is that in the event BROOKS should meet his maker before his 3 year old son is old enough to fend for himself, BROOKS can leave some advice and guidance based on his own experiences and perhaps through this medium Alfie will know something of his fathers. Brooks sincerely hopes this is not the case but it is insurance of sorts.BROOKS is capable of diverse musical style and lyrical content whilst retaining his sound and would like to see himself placed in the same musical shopping basket as the likes of Bryan Adams and Robert Palmer in terms of easy going musical diversity.

Brooks believes the beauty of creating something, especially something unique to yourself, is that part of you is permanently within that song, poem, picture. Most importantly, artistic creativity does not have to be outstanding or the next big thing, it just has to be from your inner soul and you have set a ripple in motion. If you follow your spirit you have created something very special like a child's first painting. Do it without regard of the opinion of any other individual calling them self critic. Accept what you accept and reject that which you will. Honest creation for ones self or the good of another can never be justly criticized by any person.

The 'Shiny Thing' is in us all and if you cant find yours just yet help someone else to find theirs. Help Brooks find his.

Check out this guy who Brooks believes has an honest sound worth looking out for in 2008.
