What can I say about me -- what am I, who I am -- I'm a mom. I have two fabulous sons who are now in their 30s with homes and families and jobs in distant cities -- boo-hoo.
I am a grandma, but I don't get to play the "grandma" role very often because each beautiful granddaughter is with her respective daddy in his respective distant city -- again, boo-hoo.
I'm not sister because I'm an only child. I'm not an in-law because I've been divorced for 20 years. But I am a daughter. My mom is my best friend and my running buddy. My beloved dad died in 2000, and I still miss him. I still miss my grandparents, and they died in the '70s. What really sucks about all this is I'm an extremely family oriented person and always felt my whole life evolved around my family!
So, I've made my four little kitties my family, my room mates, my little buddies. Lucy, Molly, and Tommy are all about 15 years old and Quincy is about 5. Quincy's mamma, Hilda, showed up here and blessed me with a litter of five, of which Quincy was the only one who lived. She stayed with me for about three or four years and then one day mysteriously disappeared. She wouldn't have run away. I never knew what happened to her. She was a sweetheart, and I still miss her.
My Little Buddies
I'm a complete animal protectionist nut. I watch Animal Planet and Discovery and National Geographic and sign petitions and donate money when I have it. It infuriates me beyond reason to hear about these beautiful creatures being mistreated or hunted or ignorant people who think they have no feelings.
I'm a hopeless political junkie. To give you a hint to my political leanings -- I still think Al Gore won the election and it hasn't gotten any better since. On the other hand, I'm glad that South Dakota is banning abortions, but on the other hand again, I think that gays should be able to have their civil unions if that's what they want. I think we should still have prayer in school, but I don't want the politicians telling me what I ought to be believe in or think; and I really get nervous when somebody says "God told me..."
I like digital photography and photo editing. I'm not very good at it, but I have a ball trying. My best excuse I can come up with is if I lived somewhere gorgeous like the Rocky Mountains or Alaska or the Pacific Coast, or someplace with historical or touristy sites, maybe I would be more inspired. But I don't. So, it's hard to find really interesting subjects to practice on.
I like to fool around with my computers. I have five - well, one needs a power supply. I bought my first laptop about a year ago with XP Operating System, but Vista ready. My collection is now two XP, one Win 95 and one Win ME, and one Win 98. They all seem to need something different to get them in top shape again, but I still use the Win 95. My XP desktop crashed, forcing me to get a new HP with Vista. I do not like Vista! My first computer was a TI - Texas Instruments, and then an Apple IIe, then 286, 486 - then, wow, a Pentium. So, I've had a few. I can hold my own pretty much; but then I can get in over my head, too. But I do enjoy them.
I love genealogy and have collected over 16,000 names in my Family Tree Maker file, both my ancestors and collateral lines. I've traced all four of my lines, both paternal and materal of both parents. Of course I have a fair share of dead-ends, but a lot of what I've found was on the Internet and joining specific bulletin boards and email groups where you meet up with friendly and generous people researching the same ancestors. Since I haven't been able to find anything new in a while, it's kind of become a dormant passion - but a passion nevertheless.
I enjoy things like home improvement, home repair, do it yourself, construction type stuff. Hurricane Rita gave me more opportunity to put that into practice than I would have hoped; but I did my own mold removal, pulled out carpets, laid laminated flooring, sewed curtains, made myself a computer desk, painted, and have an ambition to make myself a dining booth but that's still in the planning stages.
Well, I guess that's enough. In fact, I guess that's about it, actually. I'm just a simple lady who has no trouble getting senior discounts, who has simple hopes and dreams and sometimes not so simple fears and challenges. You're invited to share my other sites and interests and some of my favorites places to visit at Sherry's Gems .I like to meet people and make friends and share your own hopes and dreams and fears and challenges. I just about always a have a good shoulder or a word of encouragement or friendly greeting. I'm sure MySpace will be a place to meet lots of new friends.
