ULTRABASTARD! was formed in May of 2003 by Big Black John Ulmer (ex-Peteless, ex-Maggot) and Los Angeles transplant Chuck Mr Phreek Foster (ex-Maggot, ex- Optimus Prime , ex-a bunch of unknown LA bands) out of frustration and a love of feedback. For nine months, John (Bass) and Chuck (Guitar) wrote and rehearsed songs in Johns garage, using a drum machine for backbeat. In the meantime, they searched for a drummer and a vocalist. In February of 2004, a drummer (Dan Brown, ex-Loiterers) came along and the band started rehearsing in earnest, still looking for a vocalist. Finally Chuck, fed up with all the vocalists they auditioned, said, Fuck it! Ill sing my own goddamn songs! John picked up the vocals on his songs, and the trio began playing out around Long Island. They played twice at the Kings Club, once opening for Murphys Law, Two Man Advantage and No Redeeming Social Value, and once with Eyes of Hate, Verbal Abuse and the Wretched Ones. There were also a number of other shows in scummy lowlife dives (like SaintsNSinners) with some unknown but great bands (like Steel Wolf) and a couple of house parties. Unfortunately, Dan was having problems showing up for band practice, so he was let go. Once again, it was John and Chuck in the garage with a drum machine, until, one day, John said, Hey! I can play drums! Not wanting to be the interracial White Stripes, they recruited Bep (ex- Optimus Prime ) on bass and again, began rehearsing in earnest and writing more songs, with Chuck taking over Johns vocal duties. Feeling the need to play outside of the vapid black hole that is Long Island and due to the closure of a number of friendly Long Island venues, the band went into Poplo Studios to record their set. From the resulting CD, we've offered 4 songs to whet your appetite. We play the noises we want to hear, said John Lydon about PiL. Thats exactly what ULTRABASTARD! does.
John is also the bassist for The 5th. Chuck is a contributing writer to the New York Waste and a CD reviewer/interviewer for Under the Volcano .
