Tara Busch & Brian Wilson @ Swinghouse Studios in Los Angeles during the recording of her album Pilfershire Lane
Influences: "The most important (& probably obvious) influence on me is Brian Wilson. Pet Sounds changed my life more profoundly than anything ever has - it affected my whole outlook on life.
The production values - the perfect juxtaposition utter blinding sweet sunshine with deeply demented, disturbed darkness. I learned it's all about juxtaposition & affecting the listener in a holistic, uncompromising way... I feel I found a deeper source from which to write after hearing Pet Sounds...a "eureka" so to speak.. The Pilferhsire Lane album has been with me for a long time, I just didnt know where to start digging..
As far as inspiration, I find nonmusical things to be the most powerful..the train outside my window, the cars, the traffic, birds, the ocean,Griffith Park Carousel, fire, Marshall High School right around the corner from our house - seeing the kids walk to school everyday; traveling in a car at high speeds, sounds you hear in everyday life- people's calls & tonalities that crystallize into ideas for songs.
I carry my tape recorder (now bound with gaffer tape )everywhere I go. I also sleep with it since many songs come to me in my sleep.Oftentimes I am able to write in a lucid dreamstate...."Tag" was written like this as well as " We Can See Mars" and "Superfriends". Im aware that I'm dreaming in this state; I see myself writing a tune & can control it. I'm treated to a very pure state of consciousness where I get some very wild sonic textures- I repeat them into my recorder & simply recall them as you would a dream....luckily I've always been able to remember my dreams quite vividly." - Tara Busch
