Here Comes The Sound...

About Me

My name is ALEX MAIOLO.

I play bass with VIOLET VECTOR & THE LOVELY LOVELIES. How great is this band? Do you have a spare couple of days so I can tell you? It's garage rock, with bells and a great wardrobe. Amanda, Karen, Cathleen and Doug, you've made this garage rocker a happy man.
I also play guitar with my friends Tim Sommer and Alexandra Scott in HI FI SKY. Tim's first band, HUGO LARGO is one of my all time favorites, and the current band continues the tradition of drone/slo-core/ambient very respectably, if I say so myself. See the HI FI SKY page for more information on where and when we are playing (link through my Friend's List, below). Shows are rare, but pretty damn great. I'm not biased
I've played Bass, Guitar, Keys and made Squonky Noises for musical terrorist/genius TARA BUSCH. She's an endless well of talent and I miss playing with her, now that she's doing it West Coast Style. Drop by her site to say hello (see my Top Friends for a link).
Stay tuned for news about some shows I'll be playing with DOUG EDMUNDS and his new project, The Stars Explode.

Additionally, I work with THE FUTURE OF MUSIC COALITION, a non-profit group based out of Washington D.C. It was formed by the super-smart, talented, and lovely Jenny Toomey and the lovely, talented and super-smart Kristin Thompson. The FMC is dedicated to the idea that musicians need a fair shake, and that a "musician's middle class" can eventually emerge. Specifically, I work on the HINT (Health Insurance Navigational Tool) project. It's a free service that provides medical insurance advice to musicians. Get yourself right by checking it out here: www.futureofmusic.org

I've recently completed three tests, and the results are positive:
you are the velvet underground, one of the most
influential and ground-breaking acts of the
sixties. stay original!
what totally cool sixties band are you?

You are a Mod. Yeah!
What kind of Sixties Person are you?

And this one is no surprise:
You scored as Gang Of Four. Leeds quartet Gang of Four are perhaps one of the most influential post-punk bands, particularly on american music. Their music was a hybrid of punk and funk while their lyrics were usually political in nature, as evidenced on their classic 1979 debut 'Entertainment!'.

Music:

...is about the only thing I care about.
The only 70's band that mattered was Kraftwerk.
The post punk greats: Gang Of Four, Wire, Mission of Burma, The Fall, The Birthday Party, This Heat, Magazine - and their kids: Les Savy Fav, DFA.
Let's see, there's the old stuff: Kinks, (+/-Small)Faces, Zombies, most garage rock; music from the Swinging London period, including almost anything from the Nuggetts II box set.
Krautrock: Can, Neu!, Faust, and their children: Clinic, et. al.
Power Pop makes the word go 'round. Sloan are the reigning champs.
Electronica/Rock hybrid bands: Solex, LCD Soundsystem, Beta Band. I guess Komeda falls into that category too. Racket Rock: On one end, Shellac, Big Black, Steel Pole Bathtub. On the other, the Shoegazers - Ride, MBV, Moose.
I think Jon Brion is a really talented and amazing guy. Van Dyke Parks puts me in a good mood. Brian Wilson deserves all of the adoration he gets.
Bertrand Burgalat should be made king of the universe. There is a whole world of wacked out French music that needs more exposure. Oui Oui to YeYe.
90's Indie Rock: Pavement, Archers of Loaf, Beulah, Polvo, Sea & Cake.
Very few bands have topped The Jam.
"80's Music" means Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, Siouxise & The Banshees, Altered Images, Orange Juice, and the Urgh! A Music War! bands.
15 years later and I'm still listening to BritPop: Blur, Ocean Colour Scene, Pulp.
Reverb soaked darkness from The Comsat Angels and The Sound.
Paisley Underground stuff from the 80's: Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, etc.
I'm picky about folkies but I love Donovan and Nick Drake. I'm always in the mood for Joni Mitchell.
The all time pop favorites: XTC, The Church, The Byrds.
Space Rock! Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, Super Furry Animals, and the best of the lot, Radiohead.
I am now, and will always be, a Led Zeppelin and pre-'75 Pink Floyd apologist.
OK, OK, Cheap Trick was a 70's band and they mattered too.

Movies:

Doctor Strangelove, The Rutles, Naked, Italian Job (w/Michael Caine), Blow Up, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Metropolitan, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, Lost In Translation, Ghost World, Urgh! A Music War!, Igby Goes Down, Most Woody Allen Films, Das Boat.

Television:

Extras, The (original) Office, Ali G., Bill Maher, Young Ones reruns, nerdy BBC stuff, Simpsons, Family Guy, My Name Is Earl.
I'll watch damn near any concert, even if I hate the band.

Books:

Paris Review and most things Plimpton related, The "Mundane Arts" (Witold Rybczynski and similar authors), Anything about WWII.
MOJO Magazine! Yeah!
Authors: Martin Amis and his dad Kingsley, John McPhee, Stephen Fry, J.D. Salinger, Anthony Burgess, Jonathan Meades, P.G. Wodehouse, Thomas Pynchon.

Heroes:

Agit Punks - Class of '79, Rhythm Guitar Players Of The World, The First Wave Of Mods, Delia Derbyshire, The Guy Who Invented The 16 Step Sequencer, Johnny Marr, Jonny Greenwood, Kraftwerk, Baristas, Ira Glass, Bob Moog, The good people at Streetly Electronics Inc.
