Art Dolls: Figurative Art Meets Mixed Media

About Me

"They came from all over the known world to parade down Main Street on gaudy, ten-hitch wagons or caparisoned elephants..." The Magic Cavalcade ~ Edward Hoagland Welcome to the Big Top! Currently I am a staff writer for Faerie Magazine, a quarterly publication that covers faerie artists and writers, fairy festivals, related music and other mythic events. A member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Artists United, and the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists, I am an artist specializing in figurative art. My work and writing has been published in Contemporary Doll Collector, DOLLS, Belle Armoire, and ArtDoll Quarterly magazines, in the new book Aphrodisia II: Art of the Female Form, and I recently appeared on the HGTV program "That's Clever". I graduated with Honors from Middle Tennessee State University in 2003. My BA is in English, with a double minor in Medieval and Classical Studies.

For me, part of the excitement surrounding dollmaking is the opportunity it offers to explore modern and traditional techniques and materials. For instance, I often employ a modern technique known as free-motion embroidery, in which I manipulate fabric beneath a moving sewing machine needle to literally draw with thread. However, I am equally interested in the ancient craft of felting fabric, or exploring methods such as the sixteenth century raised embroidery technique known as stumpwork. This combination of the old and the new keeps me invigorated, and affords me fresh perspectives when approaching traditional forms.
