About Me

Dirk Manning is the writer/creator of NIGHTMARE WORLD and TALES OF MR. RHEE as well as the author of the weekly column "Write or Wrong" for Newsarama.com .
NIGHTMARE WORLD is a free horror comic anthology updated with two pages of story every Thursday and can be read and enjoyed by at NIGHTMARE WORLD . Some people have theorized that all of the NIGHTMARE WORLD stories tie together. These people are correct.
TALES OF MR. RHEE is a modern pulp/noir/horror series about a freelance occultist trouble-shooter who will save the day at any cost. The comic updates with a page a week every Tuesday and can also be read, for free, at NIGHTMARE WORLD . Some people theorize that this series is a spin-off of sorts of NIGHTMARE WORLD. These people are also correct.
Finally, Dirk Manning is the author of the .. column "Write or Wrong", which details his journey from a wannabe comicbook writer from the Midwest to his rise as a published, spotlighted, award-winning and generally well-liked writer who has worked with over two dozen artists across the globe to date. A direct link to this (regularly updated) series of columns can be found by clicking HERE .
As for Dirk Manning himself, he was born nine days late and has been trying to make up for the lost time ever since. Dirk Manning loves life but hates ninjas. Cthulhu is his homeboy. He's got soul but he's not a soldier. He owes his start to Golden Goat Studios and will never forget it. Dirk Manning's two main vices in life are occult reference books and female heavy-metal singers. He fears the toilet monster. He's experienced at least one ghost first-hand but still doesnt quite believe in them... yet. Dirk Manning watches very little TV. He is 100% drug-free. Dirk Manning hates it when people talk in third-person yet he still does it on a regular basis. Dirk Manning only smiles in the dark. He has a secret identity. He puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter." He geeks out over time-travel movies... HARD. What's most telling about this dappper fellow, though, is how the Boogeyman checks under his bed for Dirk Manning every night before he goes to sleep.
Believe it.

My Interests

The Twilight Zone, EC Comics, horror movies that are actually scary and/or creepy, well-written and well-drawn comicbooks that involve more than two guys in spandex jumpsuits beating on each other, and heavy/passionate music -- female lead singers a plus.

I'd like to meet:

Readers, friends, people willing to help spread the word, and fans of anything horror, comic and/or heavy metal in nature.

Music:

Mike Patton's various projects, Tool, System of a Down, The White Stripes, Otep, Mad Season, Siren Seduction, Cockfight Club, Evolotto (R.I.P.?!?), The PB Army, Broadzilla, The Thessolonian Dope Gods, Lollipop Lust Kill (R.I.P.), Porn Flakes (R.I.P.), Hogscraper, Coldplay, Evanescence, Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, Type O Negative, Eminem, I.C.P., Hanzel Und Gretyl, Lacuna Coil, Neil Young, Nine Inch Nails, GWAR, Pearl Jam, The Cure, classic Metallica...

Movies:

Anything by Quentin Tarintino, the Leonardo DeCaprio version of ROMEO + JULIET, almost every old horror movie you can think of (and hundereds you've probably never heard of), DAGON, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, MEMENTO, PI, BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM, BACK TO THE FUTURE, THE KARATE KID I and II, FREDDY VS. JASON, ROBOCOP, good comicbook adaptaions to film (of course) and anything relating to Godzilla or time-travel.

Television:

Real-time shows are few: 24, HEROES and TNA IMPACT. I also watch and enjoy THE SHIELD, DEADWOOD, LOST, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, DRAWN TOGETHER, the MASTERS OF HORROR series, FUTURAMA, HAPPY TREE FRIENDS, and FAMILY GUY all on DVD.

Books:

HIGH-BROW LITERATURE: Harlan Ellison, Ayn Rand, H.P. Lovecraft, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, J.K. Rowling...LOW-BROW LITERATURE: Alan Moore, Ed Gorey, Garth Ennis, Robert Kirkman, Eric Powell, David Lampham, EC Comics, Brian K. Vaughn, Brian Michael Bendis, James O'Barr, Mike Mignola, Neil Gaiman...

Heroes:

People that live by the principles of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. They're few and far between, but I luckily I know (and know of) a few...
