Akoma Buttons is a division of High Impact Designs. Although Akoma officially launched in 2005, the founder had previously designed and produced buttons for other entrepreneurs. He also produced and marketed his own designs through a joint venture with Spirits Embodied, an art gallery/bookstore and cafe' located in Pittsburgh, PA. Now joined by a partner this hobby is taking a life of it's own inspired by the events following Hurricane Katrina in September 2005.
The mission of Akoma Buttons is to reintroduce positive, affirming messages into African-American culture.
The vision of Akoma Buttons is to act as a catalyst in the re-establishment and/or strengthening of a sense of self-worth and self-respect in the African-American community.
The name "Akoma" is borrowed from the Adinkra symbol which means "the heart." We chose this name because we believe that the messages that the buttons carry come from the heart of those they originate from. It is a symbol of patience and tolerance, traits which are needed to unite and strengthen our communities.
