Sometimes it is better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thing

I started the Front Range Paddle Association in 2002 with the purpose of developing the top competitive youth kayakers with a vision of excellence through paddling, as opposed to simply paddling excellence. I see the Olympic motto as guiding principles in all of our lives, making us not only better athletes, but hopefully better people. My goal has not only been the development of better athletes, but better people. Better people who embody the ethics and values required to achieve paddling excellence and ethics such as…• Sportsmanship • Family life • Spirituality • Education • Volunteerism in the CommunityAll of these qualities make up the "FRPA Circle of Excellence".Through the “FRPA Circle of Excellence” the “total person” is developed. Outstanding athletes are merely a bi-product of this process. Our training camps and clinics are structured not only around this “Circle of Excellence” but they are also broken into blocks and themes based on the Five Olympic Ideals of Vision, Focus, Commitment, Persistence and Discipline. Each ideal fits into both our athletic and everyday, “out of the boat” lives. This is Sport in its purest form and is quite possibly the most noble of all human pursuits. The pursuit of perfection in any athletic discipline is a lifelong process requiring almost inconceivable levels of physical and psychological dedication. For those who follow this path and make it a lifestyle, the brief moments when action and awareness merge, and perfection feels achievable, easily justifies all of the hardships and sacrifices that had been endured. When the day is done, if the effort truly was our best, this is a victory in itself.Sport in this pure form increases the confidence of each child. A realistic belief in the power of oneself and abilities, “self-confidence”, empowers individuals to strive for excellence. Individuals who truly believe in themselves dream and strive for perfection. Our kids learn that self-confidence is transferable to others. Situation specific self-confidence can build and further develop global self-confidence, which will help in growing our sport. Therefore, to build and develop global-self confidence, athletes must be set up for success to facilitate development of situation specific self-confidence.Facilitating the development of self-confidence requires exposing athletes to opportunities for success, thereby exposing them to the possibility of failure. For athletes to seize this opportunity, they must also feel comfortable and secure...comfortable and secure enough to risk failure in their pursuit of excellence.http://www.worldpaddle.com
