John Entwistle

My name is John. I was born Oct. 9 1944, the same day as John Lennon. My Mother is Maud and me dad is Herb. I grew up in Shepard’s Bush London. I used to sing in local bars at the age of 3 singing Al Jolson standards. I was placed in Acton Grammar after scoring high on my 11 year test. At age 7 I started playing the piano which I hated. I begged my mother to let me switch to trumpet like my father. She agreed and I started the trumpet at 9. I soon switched to the French Horn because the Middlesex County Band had an over population of trumpet players. Back at Acton I met a boy named Peter Townshend. His father Cliff and mother Betty were both members of the Squadronaires. He played guitar and had listened to the latest U.S. Motown. It was around this time that I became aware of Duanne Eddie. I wanted to be loud like that. I didn't want to the lead guitar so I decided on the bass. I was drawn to it. The family couldn't afford to buy a bass so I made one, an ugly thing it was. I practiced after my studies and found that I progressed quickly. Soon Roger Daltrey approached me. He was a bad bloke. He was in a gang, the Near-Tedder Boys they called themselves, all of them ended up in lock up. He told me that he was in this band called the Detours and the bass player had just split he had heard I was good and asked if I'd join. He also told me that they were making money, an exaggeration of the fact but I was a kid. I had to leave the other band I was in with Peter called the Confederates. Roger who played lead guitar was good, but Peter was better so when an opening in a band appeared after a member, who we only kept around because he owned a Vox amp, drowned I suggested Peter should be brought into the band. We kept the amp.I graduated from Acton but had no money for further education. I got a job at the Inland revanue services or IRS to make money plus the band which had started playing clubs like the Goldhawk not just local weddings and Bar Mitzvahz.
