The Legion of Sub Par Emcees

About Me

Now, i know that for most of you, the words, sub par mean something less than stellar and, in many a case, have the direct connitations toward something that is beneath the place of quality that we call good. Interestingly enough, the idea that would formulate into what we so proudly proclaim as sub par, came from a member of the hip hop community that people consider "above par." In 2000, on a website interview, that even he has forgotten about at this point, Bryan Winchester (better known to the masses as Braille of Lightheaded fame) spoke about forming a group and/or organization that would bridge the gap for people wanting to get into the hip hop industry, helping rookies learn how to take a concept from idea to full song execution. From working in teams to write tracks, to working with producers, all the way to the recording process, Braille's idea was to have a place for the rookies to learn how to go from being a corner cipher kid to actual song makers. Speed ahead to 2002, and in a conversation with co-founder of LOSPE, Crosswords, the ideas and some of our personal beliefs meshed into a push to form a group unlike any other ever before, one consisting of pros, rookies, producers, emcees, songstresses, poets, with a common goal to get to one place in the music industry: dominance through Christ spirit in-dwelling within us. Sub Par...here's the simplist definition: There is a level of "par" that the entire world aspires to reach and its kinda...a "pie in the sky" place of millions, pricey cars, beautiful people who're perfect, etc. This is, of course, ridiculous for people to be striving in their lives to reach. LOSPE, stands to be a reality check...a "grounded" team that keeps our ideals based on solid foundations of truth and don't shy away from exposing that truth. For truth is that we depend upon God in this perilous life that has so many snares set up for us to get our eyes on stuff that is far from Christ, the shinnest rings that life can catch our eyes with. Along with that fundamental reality, sub par describes where we are in the music, as its become fully apparent that to really proclaim Christ AND live it in our lives, places us permenantly into the "underground". We accept that place and, in most ways, challenge people to really see the skill and the fact that the underground is the place where creative music is being reborn. Thus...we are sub par, when you look at it as we do. Possibly the truth of the phrase, "sub par" comes into full understanding when you look at what it means in terms of the game of Golf: When you're sub par it is considered one of the best ranks in a game. Whichever way you choose to see it, we've claimed that being Sub Par, is something good and its something we choose to make be a great thing for the glory of God.
