Saturday was the one-year anniversary of his murder.BENNINGTON TWP. - The man who killed Curt “Casey†Coffey is behind bars. His grandparents no longer have to meet with prosecutors and detectives, and they finally have Casey's personal effects back. But the void left by their grandson's absence has not diminished in the year since his murder, and closure has remained elusive due to accusations made by his killer.Remembering CaseySitting on a couch with their springer spaniel Tegon between them, Tom and Taffy Coffey worked to keep their composure while talking about their grandson Thursday.“For three to four months after this happened, I felt like somone had physically beaten me,†said Tom, 78, as he sat with his wife, only a few days before the one-year anniversary of Casey's death.“It's been a very difficult year,†he added. “What's it like now? I don't know.â€Taffy said the gut-wrenching pain of finding out about the murder is gone, but sadness remains and a numbness has settled over her.Having raised Casey since he was 2 days old, the past year without him has left his grandparents with unanswered questions and an unfillable void.On Jan. 5, 2007, the 18-year-old left their home to go on a date in Lansing and never came back.“He was going to take her out for Chinese (food),†Taffy said, remembering Casey had cashed his $71 paycheck from Wild's Furniture Store in Laingsburg that day to be able to cover dinner.“He was very smitten with her,†Tom said. “He was young - he'd lose his heart to girls.â€Casey didn't make it to his date's house and was found stabbed in the city's westside around 5 p.m. that evening. He had three serious stab wounds - one hitting his heart, Tom said. Casey died shortly after being transported to Sparrow Hospital.Although as time has passed and the intial shock of the murder has subsided, Tom and Taffy said Casey remains fresh in their mind. From Casey's work hat that Taffy now wears, to his bedroom that remains the same as the day he left it, his memory is always palpable.“Casey was the type of kid who'd stop and try to give a hand,†Tom said. “I'm sure he really kind of enjoyed people and enjoyed helping people.â€From walking people to their cars with a flashlight at night to visiting adult foster homes, his grandfather said he was “generous to a fault.â€But he was also stubborn in his ways, Tom said, insisting against protest to sleeping on a friend's floor, to help her ailing father during the nights before he passed away.A special education student, Casey battled learning disabilities but worked to graduate on time from Morrice High School in 2006. He had considered joining the Marines. But while remembering their grandchild a year after his death, the Coffeys are also plagued with unanswered questions of why it happened.Arrest of a killerIn May, Lawrence D. Jones was charged with Casey's murder. Jones was in custody on unrelated matters at the time. The 51-year-old had been out of prison for less than a year when he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He had previously served more than 25 years for armed robbery, only released May 30, 2006.In October, he was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for Coffey's murder.Jones was linked to the crime through DNA, said Lansing Police Department Sgt. Joe Dionise, who headed the case.“I've worked a lot of them you know, and I tell you, having to tell (Casey's) grandfather was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life,†Dionise said. “You could see they were a nice family from a small town...Anybody that is that young who gets murdered - it's tragic, and it was hard.â€But even though the man responsible was put behind bars, many details of the crime remain unknown. How the killer came to be with Casey and why he stabbed the teenager is still a mystery due to Jones' refusal to speak with police.Based on evidence and phone calls from his date during the evening, officials found Casey had been driving in his truck with Jones before the murder. His date called not long before the incident when she heard a deep, male voice in the background and Casey told her he was near Oldsmobile Park and had to drop someone off before he came over. When she called back less than half an hour later, the police answered, Tom said.Casey was only 20 blocks away from his date's home when he was fatally attacked.Following Jones' admission of guilt, Casey's family and friends were dealt another blow. The killer and his attorney said the murder was part of a drug deal gone wrong.“Insult to injuryâ€Although the teenager with a stubborn streak may have snuck a beer or a cigarette before, his grandparents said they were never aware of him having any involvement with drugs. And officials involved in the case said they couldn't substantiate Jones' claims.“The area where it was at was drug-related,†Dionise said. “Was (Casey) buying drugs? We can't confirm or deny. But I believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.â€Jones had said Casey had hired him to locate drugs, and the altercation was caused by the teenager's refusal to pay for the services, Tom said.“We won't ever know for sure, but I speculate that Casey...was lost and pulled over and invited the accused into his vehicle in order to locate his date's house,†said Det. Chris Devlin, who also worked the case.Ingham County Assistant Prosecutor Catherine Emerson said an autopsy showed Casey had no drugs in his system.“I know in fact he was the kind of kid who was trusting and naive and easily could have been helping someone with a ride,†Emerson said. “It isn't uncommon for a defendant to partially confess then...give an excuse for it, but it can be completely not the case.â€Even though Casey was found in an area known for drug activities, his grandparents think he was simply lost. The teen, who learned to drive on his grandparents' farm in an old stick-shift truck, would often drive routes to find landmarks with someone before heading out on his own. From going to his junior prom to driving to construction sites as part of a job, he often had difficult times with directions. The accusations “added insult to injury,†Tom said, and made closure something unreachable.Taffy said she's glad Jones is off the streets, but being able to forgive him or have closure isn't likely.“I don't feel closure,†Tom said. “Do I feel anger? I don't think that's an overriding feeling that I have. Do I feel hurt? Very badly.â€
