“After singing their praises for ages, it’s surprising to find that London DFA faves Mock & Toof haven’t released any material of their own. Until now, that is. ‘Black Jub’ is a lovable little beast: something of a modern-day update on that old Nuphonic/Maurice Fulton sound only with rough, angular edges. And at just under nine minutes long it does well to not get boring. Mock’s Mod mix of ‘Tomcat’ is a sparse bongo workout that sounds at once vintage and organic yet eerie and sci-fi. Sweden’s king of boompty house follows up his excellent Exhale and Release vocal cut You Got That with some darker more jacking fayre on London indie Tiny Sticks. Rockett is a brooding bass track that does its looping business until you can take no more. L.D.R is more fun and has a more rounded bottom end making it sound like a distant cousin on the Bodyrox’s Yeah Yeah hit. 5/6.
ONE WEEK TO LIVE (5th Feb 2007)
Linus Ekl..w has been dropping nothing but serious electro gems for as long as I can remember, from the classics on Derek Carter’s Classic imprint to bits & bobs on Tiny Sticks, Doubledown and Sugarcane. One thing that can be relied on is that the track will be killer and ole Ekl..w doesn’t disappoint here. The title track rolls layered synths over staccato, plinky plonky stabs complete with a false start or two, just to mess with multiple melons, man. The real corker from the Swede is ‘L.D.R.’ on the flip, that blends the dark chaos of Black Strobe with the tarnished groovy warmth of a Jona release on Get Physical. Tiny Sticks – massive tracks. 6/7.

Sweden’s Linus Ekl..w had a good 2006 with quirky vocal cut ‘We Got You’ proving a particular highlight. Here he takes a different turn, eschewing vocal content in favour of a big tracky groove powered by a mean bassline and one those off-your-tits-at-3am electronic riffs. Sister track ‘L.D.R.’ goes off-road altogether with a warped out jerky sounds and the odd chant building up to a fuzzy frenzy. Not pretty but certainly rugged.
