The above video was filmed, edited and produced by James "Escher" Hills.
Shodan's love affair with music started at an early age, when his record-collecting father introduced him to a variety of music styles ranging from Funk, Disco, Jazz and Electro. After getting his first hip-hop mix tape from a friend at the age of 12, he was initially intrigued by the crude language and stark reality of the lyrics but he soon realised that it was the beats as much as anything that fascinated him.
A few years later and after much pleading, he managed to talk his family into buying him an Amiga computer so that he could try recreate this great music that he was hearing and he quickly found that with the help of programs like Octamed and Screamtracker, he was more than capable of producing some beats for his friends to rap over. In '93', Shodan was introduced to jungle by his longtime friend, DJ Escher and he was instantly hooked to it by the heavy basslines, fast breaks and Ragga and Hip-Hop samples within the tracks.
Over the next few years he upgraded his studio, adding the usual samplers, effects units and sound modules and it was then that he started trying to create his own sound alongside Escher. With things going well and learning how to get around the equipment, they were making some pretty good, if somewhat primitive Drum n Bass but the vibe was lost in '97' when he settled down with a long term girlfriend and Escher went to University.
Having got back into the vibe of producing music, Shodan has been learning sound engineering and studio techniques that he is now putting to great use alongside DJ Phantasy. After a chance meeting via a mutual friend within the scene, DJ Frenzic, Shodan sent Phantasy over some of his demos and as he is always looking for brand new talent for Easy Records , it wasn't long before Phantasy found himself heading up the A13 to join Shodan in the studio to record their first 12" together. The tracks, Atomic Age and No Liars feat MC Fatman D (from the New Breed crew) have already been getting a big response from some of the biggest names from with the scene.
However, it was alongside Phantasy and lengendary "Orignal Nuttah", Uk Apache, that Shodan really made his name with the club smash, "Gimme Da Gal" on Dj Hype's mighty Ganja Records imprint.
In 2006, Shodan branched out into breakbeat and hip hop to compliment his steadily growing back catalog of releases. Label's such as Funkatech, Combat Wax, Rat Records were quick to snap up tracks. A DnB remix for ragga artist, YT entitled “England Storyâ€, alongside long cohort, DJ Phantasy was one of the year’s biggest tracks and was caned on dubplate up and down the country by all the usual suspects.
In 2007, Shodan has formed an alliance with fellow local “breakbeatateerâ€, Offkey (Guerilla Tactics, ex of Phrenetics). The fruits of this partnership are "Boogie Down", soon to be released on Hardcore Beat's sister label, Pure Filth, backed with a remix from Entity and Don't Worry, signed to Downbeat to be released sometime in 2008 backed with a Shodan solo track: "Big Sound".
